"Went in for a quick bite to eat during a road trip north. Ordered the Sushi/Sashimi dinner which was to consist of California roll plus Suhshi and Sashimi of the chef's choice. When I had ordered, I asked the server if she had any idea what those might be. She did not, and I specified that I could not have white tuna/escolar, but most other things should be fine. I did NOT know that I had to specify that I didn't want the fish from the trash, thrown away 3 days ago. Also, there's a reason they don't put the prices on the menu. This place is obnoxiously expensive, even if they used fish pulled from the sea 5 minutes ago. When I asked the prices, the server was unsure and went to take care of some other guests. The service was very slow - for my take out order it was approx. 35 minutes (for which the server apologized). For reference, there was only one table in the dining room and another that had just sat. The food was served in a white styrofoam clamshell carry out box and when I started to eat it, i noticed something was off... like the fish. The tuna was so old and slimy, the outer margins were oxidized. That means it was not the red or pink like normal, but brown around the outsides. This takes some time to accomplish at the depth it had happened. There was a pink oily fish that was supposed to be salmon... it was not salmon. If i had to guess, It was either pink-dyed bait fish or Patagonian yuckfish. It also had pinbones throughout, not characteristic of salmon. Even the California Roll was dry and messed up. The rice made to accompany was old and incorrectly prepared... it was the consistency of model glue. I know google has a policy against reviews containing specific price info, but the one entree, after tax & not tip (yes, i did tip for carry out) was well over $30. Those are LA or NYC prices... for good sushi. I cant speak to their Hibachi, Tempura, or anything else; nor would I have any desire to. The bout of gastroenteritis I had because of this meal was lesson enough for me. For the good people of Tifton, GA, I pray you get a decent Sushi/Japanese steakhouse. And, for those of you who do decide to eat here, I pray for your intestines... both large and small."
"This is by far and large one of the best hole-in-the-wall restaurants I have ever had the pleasure of dining at. I found this place initially at my college orientation and came back to be greeted with lovely staff and cooks when I came down for college. I visit here weekly and am never disappointed. By all means, give this place a shot. You won't regret it. p.s. My favourite roll is spicy tuna"
"Updated October 16th , 2023. Me and some of my work friends chose to eat here tonight and unfortunately it was a mistake. I love Hibachi Japanese and Once Upon a Time Tokyo used to be good. However, my visit tonight was pretty rough. From long wait times to a dirty environment and smelly bathroom to receiving bad food I probably will never be back. I was served rancid steak and I'm hoping I don't get sick from it. The only good thing about our visit was the lady trying to run the front of the house as she was alone and trying to give it her very best. My review from 3 years ago: I have not eaten at Tokyo in Tifton in quite some time. Overall the food was pretty good. The service does need to be improved, but was not as bad as some of the other reviewers have recently noted. Mainly it is inexperience and what appears to be understaffing. The pricing per entree is in line with most other Japanese restaurants, however they do upcharge for fried rice. It bothers me very much when a Japanese restaurant up charges for what is basically the cheapest item they feed you and the item that 95 + percent of the people expect to get when they go to a Japanese Hibachi restaurant. Sure they use some butter, oil, soy sauce, salt and pepper, and of course rice, but should they up charge you $2 for that, absolutely not. Then on top of that if you get double rice they double charge you another $2. The chef who cooked tableside was pretty good and did a couple new tricks that I hadn't seen yet which was nice to see. I think of myself as an expert when it comes to Japanese restaurants because it's one of my favorite and have eaten at dozens of them across the US. As for cleanliness everything looked as clean as most Japanese restaurants that have some years on them. They were out of some drink options listed on the menu and need to improve on that fact as well. Overall though I give them an average 3-star rating which is fair, but there's definitely room for improvement. Also, they really were not following covid guidelines and the restaurant was not busy at all for a Wednesday night. A free bit of advice from an experience I had at a Japanese restaurant in North Georgia would be to have a 25% off night on the evenings that are typically slow for you. That would definitely pick up business and you would make more money overall with a full restaurant. However you have to address your service and get the experience level up before doing something like that or you would not do yourself any favors."
"Everything was filthy, didn't even feel safe sticking around for the food after being left alone for 20 minutes with no service. Stood around the register for about 10 minutes waiting for someone to let me pay my tab and leave. I'll put photos of the "sushi bar" with cracks and holes in it and the dirty menu and sushi bar. They're understaffed. It sucks but this will be a small little joint that's quality will slowly diminish over time until it goes belly up. Unfortunate"
"It was amazing! We went for Valentine's/My husband's bday. Our chef had a great personality and the food was soooo good. Our waitress was ontop of the drinks and very nice. We had a wonderful time! We will definitely be back!"
