"El Refugio is a wonderful nonprofit organization that gives the families of detainees at the private for-profit detention center in Lumpkin, GA, a place to stay while visiting relatives. Stewart Detention Center is intentionally located in a small impoverished town far from everything, so it is hard to visit. Stewart is the largest detention center east of the Mississippi. El Refugio is a glimmer of mercy and compassion in a dark time of institutionalized cruelty and racism in this country. Detainees at Stewart are denied basic human rights and many have no idea when they will be released. I visited the detention center, and I met with a young man who's serious medical problems were being ignored. I highly recommend supporting El Refugio. My hope is that one day it will be illegal to profit off the suffering and detention of refugees trying to flee violence and oppression in other countries.
