Reviews of Piatt Park Gorge and Cave Area
"As we often do we found a new place to hike at Piatt Park located in southern Ohio and what an adventure it turned out to be! First it's an absolutely beautiful area with a deep gorge, steam, caves and gigantic rock formations to walk through. It's listed as only a short hike of approximately 1.5 miles. But if you do the full loop it can get pretty strenuous quickly. Our guess is that most people walk to the falls and then backtrack out which is wide and easy going. If you decide to cross back over the water as we did and take the zigzag up the cliff and back you will be approximately one step short of a mountain goat! So here is my caution, even though we are a bit older, we do a lot of walking and hiking. This is one of the few times in our travels where I was actually worried about getting through without one of us getting hurt because it was so steep and in many places less than shoulder wide. It was so bad in one location that I literally threw my wife a rope so I could climb ahead and then she could use the rope to help stabilize herself as I kept it taunt! Also the trails after the first part are not well marked at all and we spent a lot of time wondering if we were heading the right way even with the map. In fairness to the park the second part of the trail is marked as a "Primitive Trail, and requires climbing on rocks and steep, slippery inclines". They aren't kidding around! What we thought would be a quick hour of leisurely walking turned into almost 3 hours of amazing beauty and some seriously treacherous locations. I'd recommend it If you're physically up for it. it's a great adventure and a photographic wonderland!"
"What a gem this place is. Nestled far off the beaten path and nearly empty when I was there. Great hiking and waterfalls to die for. Highly recommend checking this place out. Not: there are a lot of steps to get down to the waterfalls, worth it totally but keep in mind that what goes down must come back up."
"Piatt Park was an exciting find. I visited with my husband in June of '22, then again around March '23 but the trails were closed seasonally then. The main trail goes around a deep gorge/ravine area. You can take the side path and find even more excitement below the main path. There are caverns, rock scrambles and all kind of fun nooks to explore. It feels like another world. There are multiple paths from down below that go back up to the main path, if you are not paying attention it's possible you will surface in a different part of the main path than where you descended from. If you get lost, just head up. The drive into the park is easy but rural and almost feels like you might not be on the right road. You are in the right place when you see all the camper spots, the trail head is in that area and clearly marked. It looks like there is a utility lot that people use as auxiliary parking just down the road from the looks of it you might want awd/4wd to park there."
"Really neat place! Drove an hour from my motel in Cambridge, was relatively east to find and was empty when I arrived. The cave and waterfall are opposite sides from the parking area, don’t try to find a shortcut lol I ended up hiking 2 miles total with my slight back track. My senior dog had a little trouble but still made the whole hike."
"Piatt Park was a lovely surprise! It was more rugged and challenging than we had initially expected and more beautiful as well! Bringing along my trekking poles was definitely the right decision. We arrived at midday and the descending shafts of light punctuated the darker recesses of the terrain for some beautiful photography. This was also a very quiet and serene location as well. We highly recommend it!"
