"I must say I signed up for this tour just as something to do while in Savannah at first, but after taking the tour I say this is a must do while in Savannah. Mr. Brown knows his stuff. Very informative and educational all while full of sight seeing. There is so much hidden history and I am glad someone recommended this tour to me. Now I highly recommend it to you."
"A very insightful and personal tour of the black history of Savannah. Mr. Johnny is very knowledgeable and was mentored by a renowned black history preservationist of the area. This tour starts at the Visitors Center and is taken via bus with hop-off and walk areas. What we loved most is this tour took us out of the main historic district and around to areas we wouldn’t have known about otherwise. We were particularly moved by the cemetery. We scheduled the tour same day and had no problem; there was only one other group of 3 besides our group of 2 on the tour. The only downside is that while driving old history videos are played instead of narration from the tour guide."
"I had expressed interest in a Black history tour of Savannah and my Uber driver had provided a flier for this tour. I called the owner and asked about the tour and said I was interested in doing it on my last day in Savannah. When I arrived at the visitors’ center, I was told to wait on the bench and he would pull up. We (myself and others in the group) saw a church bus circle the lot and leave but again, we weren’t sure if that was him. One of the visitor center staffers came out and we told her that we had seen the bus. She said it was Johnny, the tour operator, and she told us to call and see if he would circle back. I called him and he’s immediately rude and yelling that we had to meet him at his sign by the trolley tours. Meanwhile, he had said nothing about the bus he has for the tour ( It’s from the Thankful Missionary Baptist Church) or a sign when I called him and this information is NOT on the flier. Based off this interaction, I don’t recommend this tour ( the staffer at the visitor center also said he’s always late). There are too many other Black history tour operators in Savannah and I will be sure to check out one of them next time. I did have an amazing tour on the Gullah Geechee history of Savannah from Sister Vaughnette and I highly recommend that one instead. I plan to do the Day Clean Tour next time I’m in Savannah for a Black history tour. The owner, Dr. Amir Jamal Toure, was friendly and I called him immediately after and he sent all the information I needed to schedule a tour."
"I have been coming to Savannah for the past seven years during the Thanksgiving Holiday. I have done Many tours but the Freedom Trail Tour without a doubt is the best tour I have been on in Savannah. Kudos to Mr. Brown for a job well done. Planning to bring my family next year to enjoy this wonderful experience."
"I visited Savannah for 4 days and had already completed a tour through Old Savannah Tours. I had also completed a tour of the First African Baptist Church and that tour left me wanting to hear more about Savannah's black residents. While at the visitor center, I came across a sign for the Black Heritage Tour by Freedom Trail Tours. At first, I was frustrated because getting in touch with this company was difficult. One morning, I waited near the sign at 10am but no one showed up. When I called the reservation number, I was told the 10am tour was no longer available. I called back and asked about the 10am tour for the following day but since I was alone, I was told they could not be sure if the tour would take place. I almost gave up at that point but was determined. A few minutes after 10am, I was able to do the tour. Despite the frustration, I was glad I made the time to do this tour. The conductor, Mr. Brown, took us on a simply fascinating tour of Savannah's black heritage. Along the way, he told us many interesting facts. I will never forget the lynching tree and touching the graves of several Confederate soldiers. Despite being difficult to schedule, I would recommend this tour to anyone who wishes to gain a better understanding of Savannah's black heritage."
