Reviews of Boiling Springs Middle School
"My daughter brought home her elective choices for next year and I was NOT impressed. When I was in Jr High/Middle School I took home economics, wood shop, typing, creative writing, and first aid & safety. These are basic life skills!! Learning how to create an app or learning about STEM careers are not necessary for middle school aged children. That is more suited for high school kids who are trying to figure out what to do with their lives. My daughter could care less about a STEM career at 13 yrs old. Also, I'm not understanding why they only go to gym for half the school year. This is so bizarre to me. Then you wonder why kids are so out of shape these days. My daughter calls lunch "recess" because that's the only time she gets to go outside for half the school year. I'm also not impressed with the staff at this school. My daughter goes to these enrichment classes before school starts every morning. It was explained to me that this was like a tutoring service. She goes for both math and science and she has gone for about half the school year. Well her grades in both of these subjects have continuously gone down all year. I'm confused by this... I thought the tutoring was suppose to help bring her grades up. I asked my daughter why she thinks her grades are going down and she told me that she is too embarrassed to ask questions during class because the other kids make fun of her for not understanding the material. Not once has a teacher reached out to me with concern over my daughter's grades. The school has had only one parent/teacher night during the whole school year. My daughter has ADHD and has been on IEP since 3rd grade. When she started the school year here I double checked with the school counselor to make sure they were making accommodations for her. The school counselor spoke condescendingly to me and said she felt like my daughter no longer needed to be on IEP. I took what she said back to my daughter's doctor and he was completely irritated with the school counselor. So the doctor requested in writing that she be retested to get her back on IEP and the school counselor refused to test her. Fast forward to the end of the school year and my daughter just brought home her 4th qtr grades and she has D's in all of her core classes. Im not crazy about the school giving out iPads to the students but it is what it is.... There are some students that aren't allowed to bring their iPads home. My daughter is one of those who doesn't bring her school iPad home and that was by choice. We didn't want it in our house and have to be responsible for it. However, the school makes it difficult for those students to do their homework. My daughter had four reading assignments this year and two of them had to be on a book that you had to download onto the iPad. So there was no way for her to do this assignment at home. She had to read the book when she could at school when/if she had any free time. I know for a fact that there are literally millions of paper books out there. This should not have been an issue. I'm definitely not happy with the school nurse at this school. There were several times I was called for non-emergency matters but most recently my daughter complained of stomach cramps and we received a call from the school nurse and she had me convinced that there was an issue with my daughter's appendix. So of course I came and got her and took her to the doctor the same day. The doctor rolled her eyes and said, "This school nurse went to the extreme...its just a little stomach bug...its been going around." I took my daughter home and the next day she was completely fine. So I wasted money on a doctor's visit and my daughter missed a half a day of school for nothing. Oh and the parent pick up line is ridiculous. School lets out at 315p but I wouldn't suggest getting there until well after 330p. With the set up they have going...you'll be sitting there for a while."
"This school is mediocre at best, and that's being generous. The app takes up so much space, and it sometimes never loads. The "learning" that happens is more of a memory game. Its not about "learning" its more like "remember only the important information to pass" then discard the information after taking the test. The kids that go here are 11-14, but the teachers (and especially the assisstant principals) are incredibly constricting, probably because they know they can be easily overthrown by a bunch of angsty and rebellious teens. The iPads used to be fun until they started adding more and more restrictions, and now I don't even want to use the god forsaken thing. The principal forces the use of iPads onto the students, even to the point if you do not have them you will get ISS (in school suspension). That is especially funny because most of the classes barely use them. The worst part of this place has to be the students within it. The students are rude, annoying, and generally humongous scumbags. There's gangs, LGBT hate, bullying, and fights. The teachers, guidance counselors, and assisstant principals are generally no help whatsoever when it comes to these situations. You can tell them someone is being bullied, but they won't care. They won't do anything to get rid of bullying, hate, or this gang that is going around. They'll pretty much just wag their finger at them and say, "No, no, don't do that." The school doesn't give one single crap about you unless you do sports. Everyone else is left to the wolves. The wifi here is absolute garbage, which is ironic for a school that relies heavily on technology. Every year they promise that they will get better wifi, but they would rather blow all their money on sports. It's perplexing how they even managed to win the Palmetto's Finest award. Well I know how, they were incredibly fake while the judges were here. There were students holding doors (which was not there until the Palmetto's Finest judges showed up), the LEAD rules posted in evey hallway and bathroom, and everyone just generally acting two-faced. I bet you every single cent I have that if these Palmetto's Finest judges came in on an ordinary day, they would snatch that reward back in the blink of an eye."
"I would say that the communication between teachers & parents is terrible .... they mostly say reference the app for students grades but it don't work .... if you call the school nobody knows what's going on & you leave messages & No one calls you back .... teachers are rude & I agree w/being no time between classes to use the lockers my son's backpack weighs as much as he does .... the school needs improvements"
"This school was fine but when I came to classes there were rude students they say they are palmettos finest they aren't. They also had five minutes in between class that's not enough to go from one side of the school to the other plus use the bathroom ."
"this school has teachers that dont care if you learn, they just want you to pass. some teachers will say you dont have any make up work, then they'll give you low grades for not turning in work that they never gave you. y''all might be a palmetto's finest school, but y'all dont deserve that title."
