Reviews of Monarch Elementary School
"TLDR - I hate the administrator, loved the school. Very great place. Years experience with this location: 4 There is a lot to be said about Monarch. i tried a succinct pros and cons list but it turned into this whole spiel. Pros: - Kids learn amazing amounts at this school - The special needs class is headed by a fantastic teacher (Oaks) - They do really cool stuff for the kids to keep it interesting like "Steam Day" where all the kids get to hands-on amazing things in almost every class (it's a schoolwide function...) CONS: - The principle. Vaughn Overman. She's hardcore about excluding special needs children from school events - - They did not participate - at all - despite teacher's objections - They don't do the 5th grade Washington DC trip that is near-universal in this nation - Vaughn Overman has no job running Monarch, she is cruel and petty - - We equipped a non-verbal child with an autism-specific device to monitor his location - he's a hell of a runner - he's run before - they didn't bother asking us about it or anything, they just threw a huge fit, removed it nullifying it's purpose, and said we were violating laws about wiretapping and violating the privacy of the teacher. Teachers have no legal expectation of privacy (I looked it up), and this almost-lawsuit scared the hell out of the district. She's possibly the worst administrator I've ever seen. Almost took her to court over excluding my son from activities. She doesn't treat all kids that poorly, mine is special needs and she demonstrates a disdain for children that aren't neurotypical. Please fire/promote/demote immediately. Conclusion: Everything about the school except for Vaughn Overman and a lack of a Washington DC trip is impeccable. The only thing I would personally change about the school is letting kids have cupcakes or sweets brought in on birthdays (come on we all loved that in elementary school! - presidential healthy eating ruined that for our kids - give them cake!). I know my cons section is long, but the administration desperately needs to have the head removed so a new one can take it's place. The Asst Principal needs to take over - Mr. Loach clearly loves kids, cares about education, and takes the time a principle should to know their student body - I think the only reason he's not in charge already is because he's not ancient. 10/10 Would enroll children at Monarch again because this school is amazing. 0/10 Would not tolerate Vaughn Overman again. That woman is toxic."
"When we moved to the area, we told the buyer's agent that our top priority was a good school. She said we had to be near Monarch Elementary. It has proven true. I don't like a lot about schools: The condescending mothers who have nothing better to do except pretend to be important people in the PTA. The constant demands on the kids to do fund raisers. Class pictures twice a year and a yearbook - all overpriced. Monarch has all of that. However, Monarch also has a good teaching core. As an example, my son began 2nd grade testing in the 5th percentile. He finished the year testing in the 95th percentile. At no cost to us, they had specialists work with my son to improve his reading and writing skills so he could perform well. When I was in school, we had the "dumb" room for kids who couldn't learn. They never got better and rejoined the class. At Monarch, the children get better and, as in my son's case, they excel beyond the rest of the class. He has gone from requiring special needs to being in the challenge program all in just one year. I doubt that would happen at any average school ."
