Reviews of Hazel and Hanks Gourmet Market
"Checked out this place yesterday and really enjoyed! I ordered the Chicken Tender Basket, and was pleasantly surprised at how BIG the meal was. A mound of delicious curly fries, and 3 huge chicken strips, and comes with a choice of sauce. I tried the Red BBQ and thought it taste great! They are super nice people as well. The seating is small (about 4 tables), with it being in a small strip mall. The bathroom situation is a little weird (in the back, thru the kitchen), but they are accommodating. Music in the lobby wouldn't hurt. Definitely recommend and will definitely return!"
"Food was delicious. I got the hot Italian beef because I had been craving one since I visited Chicago a few years ago. I think it's probably even better than the ones I had in Chicago. They were attentive and friendly. They had a unique selection of sodas and a small retail section with sauces and rubs. I'm definitely looking forward to going back and trying the pork tenderloin sandwich, which was impressive-looking to say the least."
"We're from Northern Indiana and we saw these sandwiches on a social media post and had to go see for ourselves. Owners are from Illinois so that's close enough. The tenderloin was the size of your head, beat thin, ton of meat with a crispy coating. I worked my way around the outside trying to get to that tender bun. After getting a few bites out of the bun I settled for a to go box. Wonderful sandwich, you'll understand if you're from the Midwest. The Italian beef had great flavor and the wife doesn't like beef. Came on a nice toasted roll with an au jus gravy that was a little more Italian than Chicago style, nice flare. Owners are great and very friendly. Parking isn't great but their small, compact menu is. Definitely is worth the trip."
"Really good food. My wife had the pork tenderloin sandwich which was juicy and so flavorful. It was also the biggest sandwich I'd ever seen. I had the Italian beef which was tasty and had just the right amount of heat. The service was quick and the staff were super friendly and pleasant too. 100% recommend."
"BLUF: if I could give them 10 stars I would! Food and service is AWESOME and I’ve been planning my next visit since before I even left the shop the first time. I am big on reviews and take pride in providing honest feedback to help others (like myself) in making decisions when it comes to who/what they patronize. Some people may find few reviews to be a red flag for a business. Throw in one bogus low rated review and you may immediately decide to pass — but don’t pass on Hazel & Hanks Gourmet Market before you read this and check them out yourself!! 1. Food — It’s a breath of fresh air to have gourmet, fresh made to order, convenient (fast) food option on Dorchester Rd. No hike to West Ashley or Park Circle to find a spot that is conscious of those who don’t prefer mystery meats and additives to their foods. The menu is not overwhelming. The staff (I dealt with both owners) detail the items, provided great recommendations based on their specialties and my stated preferences, and I was more than pleased. I ordered the signature Chicago Italian Beef Sandwich and my Nana got a pulled pork sandwich which I believe was a special. Both came with seasoned curly fries. Can you say perfection??! The flavors were properly complimenting and balanced. The beef sandwich had a little heat to it, but nothing to be afraid of. The only way to understand is to try the food yourself and once you do, you will credit this establishment for caring about their craft and executing it to the highest standards. Keep in mind, it’s a sandwich shop with an adequate menu that, in my opinion, exudes simplicity but not in lieu of deliciousness. Pricing was from $10-$13 for a portion that will either fill your belly to more than full, or give you the option to save the rest for later (like my Nana did). 2. Pricing. I hope the popularity that I anticipate this place growing doesn’t up the prices! Lol. They are almost too reasonable for the quality of food and amount you receive. I’m from DC so I am used to paying a lot more for a hot sandwich with a hot side. Anyone who says this spot is overpriced doesn’t understand the cost of doing business these days. And, I’d go as far as calling them full of it because fast food spots are costing just as much these days and you don’t even know what you’re eating half the time. I will pay these prices for gourmet, made to order any day. 3. Service. There is nothing like being welcomed with a smile upon entry into an establishment, especially for the first time. Sets the tone for the experience for sure. I made it known I was visiting for the first time and the staff was welcoming and went over the menu with me and answered my many questions about the menu options since everything read so deliciously! I wanted to order one of everything after hearing what goes into the different dishes that peaked my interest. Also a plus, they make their own BBQ sauce! So in the case of the pulled pork sandwich, my nana got to choose from the two sauce options. The staff was patient, kind, and appreciative of our patronage. They took pride in their food and implied that I would be more than pleased, which I was! I don’t like hype, but I’m telling you, as a modest spot focusing on good, quality food, they deserve some for sure. Conclusion: Love this place! The vision of the owners and their commitment really shows in the quality of food AND service. I highly recommend and I look forward to becoming a frequent patron. I really hope they do well as a business and start a movement of similar quality establishments to continue popping up on this side of town. When I go back, I will make sure to take pictures to add to my review. I started to dig in soon as I got home and didn’t want to takeaway from the amazingness of the food by posting half ate pictures. That said, don’t let the lack of pictures and reviews deter you from this place. Everything isn’t for everyone, but if you are open to trying new spots as long as the food is good — you will not be disappointed with Hazel and Hanks!"
