About the Charles Towne Landing Visitor Center and Museum
Charles Towne Landing Visitor Center and Museum is located at 1500 Old Towne Road in Charleston, South Carolina. The institution serves as a travel agency and offers a variety of activities and exhibits for visitors. The Visitor Center/Gift Shop is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., while the Animal Forest and Adventure attractions have slightly different hours. The Adventure is a 17th-century replica trading vessel that allows visitors to experience sailing between South Carolina and Barbados.
The park grounds are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission prices vary based on age. Pets are allowed in most outdoor areas as long as they are kept on a leash and waste is properly disposed of.
The park manager, David Baker, has a passion for outdoor recreation and enjoys sharing the history and beauty of Charles Towne Landing with visitors. The site is the birthplace of South Carolina and offers a glimpse into the earliest colonial history of Charleston. Visitors can explore hands-on exhibits, take a self-guided history trail, and tour the Adventure ship. The Animal Forest zoo features otters, bears, bison, and more in their natural habitat. The grounds also include 80 acres of gardens, the Legare Waring House, and a live oak alley.
The Legare Waring House is a popular venue for weddings and special events, offering a unique blend of historic charm and flexible space. The site is part of the South Carolina State Parks system, which includes other parks such as Colonial South Carolina and Caesars Head State Park. Whether you're interested in history, nature, or outdoor adventure, Charles Towne Landing has something for everyone to enjoy.

Reviews of Charles Towne Landing Visitor Center and Museum
"I love this state park. It's a lovely walk with lots of history. There's a museum, a zoo, and a pirate ship. There's an old plantation house (can't go in). It tends to get a little pricey if you have kids, but if you buy the park passport it'll save you a lot of money in the long run. The park passport is good for a year and gives you unlimited entries to parks that charge. This is the most expensive state park in SC but it's well worth the visit as long as weather is nice. There is also a little tram to help you get around if you get tired of walking."
"I loved this so much. Very educational!!!! The animal experience is so much of a closer experience that large zoos. I'm so glad we went!!!"
"Worth a visit if the weather is nice. Brought my 3 little ones here and we walked the entire thing. We didn't stop very long at any one point and even with that combined with our slow pace - we were there 3 hours. The animal section was a bit underwhelming honestly and the boat the kids were excited to see was not there when we went due to maintenance, however even with those set backs I would still recommend visiting this beautiful place to enjoy the outdoors."
"This is a great place to take the family. Has a rich historic story for those history buffs. There is a trolley you can take or for those that want the exercise, you can walk the trails. My husband and I took our granddaughters (ages 5 and 7) and they both loved it. The people in the visitors center were very nice and they also have a gift shop."
