About the Washington Square
Washington Square is a beautiful park located in Savannah, Georgia, United States. This institution is not only a peaceful green space for visitors to enjoy, but also a hub for important events and initiatives in the community.
One such event is the Mayor’s Small Business Conference (MSBC) and Savannah Small Business Week, which brings together local entrepreneurs and business owners to network and learn from each other. Registration for the 2024 conference is now open, showcasing the city's commitment to supporting small businesses.
In addition, Washington Square is also the venue for the annual Earth Day Savannah festival, a celebration of sustainability and environmental awareness. This event is a great opportunity for the community to come together and learn about ways to protect our planet.
Furthermore, the institution is proud to announce the launch of a Community Engagement app by the Savannah Police Department, aimed at improving communication and collaboration between law enforcement and residents. This innovative tool is a testament to the city's dedication to fostering positive relationships within the community.
Lastly, Washington Square plays a key role in promoting arts and culture in Savannah through the Weave-A-Dream funding program. This initiative supports emerging nonprofit organizations in realizing their creative projects, with grants of up to $5,000 available. The institution will also be hosting an information session for interested applicants to learn more about the program.
Reviews of Washington Square
"This peaceful square was once the Trustee's garden, as it was on the perimeter of the original development. Also nearby is the historic Pirates House, which was built in 1753 as an inn for seafarers, pirates and sailors. And Fire Station #9 was established in the area (plaque). The park now serves a quiet existence among many fine residences represented in my pictures."
"I really felt like I was going to walk up on Forrest Gump in that square. I was so relaxed and serene. I could have sat there all day."
"Had the best picnic in this park!"
"The first square I visited upon reaching Savannah's historic district---only after returning home to NYC and doing some reading---did I find that it is the only square without a major monument or fountain at its center. It also happens to be the northeastern most square and is just a block away from the original easternmost boundary of the city as it was laid out. I did get a chuckle reading a fellow guide's review, who noted that it is mostly used by local residents, neighbors of the park, who get together and drink wine and walk their dogs: something I witnessed the evening I walked through. They seemed completely uninterested in engaging tourists ;-). It is green and lovely nonetheless. I'll add that having strolled through the square and standing on the SW corner of the park looking west on Congress Street the gas lighting of some nearby homes caught my eye. Walking past those I had a look at the tiny, attractive, historically significant Freeman's Cottage built in 1820 as well."
"This park is used by the nearby residents mostly for dog walking! A few occasionally meet in the evenings for wine and chitchat."
