Peachtree Rock Heritage Preserve
About the Business
Peachtree Rock Heritage Preserve is a unique and educational park located in Lexington, South Carolina. Just a short drive from downtown Columbia, this preserve offers visitors a glimpse into the area's rich history and unusual geology. The sandstone formations, fossils of ancient marine creatures, and towering longleaf pines create a picturesque setting for hiking and exploration.
At the entrance of the preserve, visitors can enjoy the sight of the only natural waterfall on the state's coastal plain, cascading into a small pool. The now-toppled Peachtree Rock, after which the preserve is named, is described in detail at a new kiosk near its location. Despite the rock's fall, visitors can still see a smaller formation known as "Little Peachtree Rock" along the trail.
The preserve is home to a variety of plant and animal species, including moisture-loving plants, fern communities, and unique woody goldenrods. Visitors may also spot Northern red salamanders, skinks, and a variety of bird species during their visit. The Midlands Master Naturalists have created bird and plant lists for the preserve, showcasing the diverse wildlife that can be found here.
Managed by The Nature Conservancy and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Peachtree Rock Heritage Preserve is dedicated to nurturing its native longleaf pine forests. Efforts have been made to replace non-native pine species with longleaf pine seedlings, promoting the growth and germination of these important trees.
Whether you're interested in history, geology, or simply enjoying nature, Peachtree Rock Heritage Preserve offers a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors of all ages. Come explore this hidden gem in the Midlands and discover the beauty and diversity of South Carolina's natural landscapes.

"Great hike w the hubs. Not too crowded. Beautiful January day."
"Great local spot for a good hike that isn’t too strenuous. The trails can be a little confusing so have a reliable gps map (service is good all over the park so that should not be a problem) all trails is pretty accurate for this area. Big peachtree rock fell a few years ago due to vandalism but little peachtree still stands (in my pictures) if you’re willing to hike father out. There are no bathrooms in the preserve and no water sources other than the falls and various small streams (not safe to drink) so bring your own supplies and use the restroom on your way in!"
"Very cool nature preserve! Lots of trails, waterfalls and giant rocks to walk and climb!"
"What a hidden gem! We spent the morning here walking about every trail. You have to be careful to watch the tree markers. The rocks were fantastic and the waterfall was the best part to end with. The Little Peach Tree Rock was a very impressive site to see as well as the "snow cone" rock wall. Highly recommend for kids who like a good little hike! Best part: FREE."
"Beautiful hike with lots of ways to go. Easy to follow trails with colored arrows marking the ways. I've been a few times already. Every time I've gone, I've managed to hike for at least an hour. Trails loop back around if you want a shorter hike. Just pick a color and stick to it. For longer hikes, switching colored trails is recommended (2-3 hours). I like switching between green and red trails. We switched to the black trail once and ended up at a different parking lot, so be warned of that. You'll have to walk up the side of the highway to get back to your car if you do this. I recommend taking a picture of the map before entering so you don't get lost. Happy hiking!"
