"There are many issues I could talk about, but recently at 70 Greene, we've faced a deeply troubling issue that has significantly impacted the well-being of residents across multiple floors. For several weeks, an unbearable odor pervaded our living spaces, stemming from a very sad event discovered in January—a deceased resident in one of the apartments. This tragic discovery explained the source of the persistent smell, a decomposing body, which appears to have gone unnoticed for an extended period, despite the presence of eviction notices on the apartment door. Many residents had previously reported the concerning odor through maintenance requests, unaware of its true cause until the situation was revealed when residents witnessed multiple police officers on their floor. It was communicated through word of mouth that the discovery necessitated an investigation, delaying immediate cleaning and remediation efforts. During this challenging time, the response from the management team has been disturbing. Despite the severity of the situation, there has been no offer of support, temporary relocation, compensation, moving assistance to a different unit, or cleaning assistance for those affected. Even when professional cleanup was eventually undertaken for that unit (allegedly with hazmat suits on), the measures taken by management to address the residents' concerns are non-existent and have demonstrated a complete lack of empathy. The lack of adequate communication and support from Equity Residential in the face of such a distressing event has been disheartening. As residents, we had hoped for a more appropriate and proactive response, considering the health implications, emotional distress, and lasting trauma that can be caused by these circumstances. Equity Residential is a multi-billion dollar company and they could have easily offered compensation and moving assistance to those impacted, in addition to counseling services. Management will not take phone calls and are extremely unresponsive to emails, but I see that they reply to Google reviews."
"POOR MANAGEMENT – Would not recommend. My roommate and I have had issues with the 70 Greene Leasing office since the first day we moved in. Before our move-in day, set by 70 Greene, we were assured the apartment would be ready. However, after spending money to hire movers, we arrived to an unfinished and dirty apartment. The movers had to leave our stuff piled up to hopefully make room for the apartment to be fixed. The complex sent someone to our apartment to install the backsplash in the kitchen, which should have been done prior to moving in and caused a huge disruption. My roommate and I were trying to work with construction in the background. We informed management the painters were not able to paint around our belongings and would have to return. The manager, Emily Krygier, assured us she would take care of the issues. After several months of either slow responses or none at all, our apartment has yet to be fully move-in ready. My roommate and I tried several times to go to the office to meet Emily since she was unresponsive to emails but were told we would have to set up a meeting to talk to her. We tried to do so repeatedly but she has avoided a meeting every time we asked. Her latest email completely ignored the fact that we are STILL requesting to meet with her to discuss our situation. On top of the apartment not being ready, it took over 2 months to receive our mail key after repeatedly requesting one. Our mail was rejected and sent back to sender because the box was full. The lack of management and accountability is inexcusable. Over three months later, I am still waiting for my apartment to be fully set up."
"I find it necessary to share my recent experience. There is a persistent, insufferable smell (I have never smelled anything like that before). It's reached a point where the air conditioner, vents, walls, floors, and even the electrical plugs are emitting an unbearable odor. Additionally, the living conditions have become so intolerable that the hallway and the room have induced nausea, making me and my family physically ill, including headache, insomnia, and anorexia. The absence of anyone in both the management and leasing offices has been frustrating. Nobody came even after we submitted the maintenance request. This lack of responsiveness has left us with no choice but to endure the harsh COLD weather by keeping all windows open, sealing plugs, and spending extended periods of time outside. We’ll move to hotels if the conditions persist or worsen. The nearby hotels are expensive but we have no choice. This is a highly distressing experience and the unavailability of management makes it even more challenging to resolve these issues promptly."
"Writing this review after staying there for a year, and declining renewal offer for a 2BR. 1. We moved here from 65 Bay St simply because it was cheaper and we regret it. When you consider additional charges ($200 for trash removal and water) and you will not get your security deposit back this is not going to cheaper. 2. Elevators are a constant issue, my entire inbox is filled with elevator repairing, elevator is working, a different elevator is being repaired now. Like 3 elevator related emails a week, every single week. 4 elevator for a 50 storey building is pushing it to begin with. Of which one is service elevator, and atleast one will be down. So you’re left with two. 3. Repair teams take forever, we notified building of the dryer issue in the first month of us being there. The dryer was replaced during the 8th month. Repair team would take a month and do a temporary fix that would last a week. Before we moved out in the last 3 months we suffered through HVAC issue being aware how much time repair team takes. 4. In general anything that is broken is left unfixed for prolonged periods of time. Eg. the one of the garage door stopped working when we were 6 months in, even when we moved out, if wasn’t working. Equipment like the stair master in the gym is broken and just kept for a show piece. 5. Lastly and most importantly, the building is ran by people who deal in bad faith, misrepresentation, false statement, unlawful charges. Too much to write to explain, but in short you don’t want the current team of assigned people to be your landlord. You’d definitely win if you go to small court but let’s be honest, your time is more important than that, so you move on. The building management is aware of that. If you haven’t signed a lease, consider building like 65 Bay St and Urby. They might be expensive initially but you won’t regret it. Last thing you want is suffering through 6 months of not having HVAC/W&D. Google reviews never lie and I wish I had paid more attention."
"70 Greene has caught a lot of heat for the “flood” in 2022 but I would be remiss not to mention how helpful management was to me in my recent move out experience. I missed the notice about notifying them that I was leaving which by contract requires me to pay a late notice fee- EQR worked with me to completely waive the fee. You don’t have a lot of opportunities to thank building management (most of the time only complaints make it here!) but this was above and beyond helpful. I’ll also note that the doorman/woman service is always kind and friendly and I like the new locks they recently put in all of the units where you can access your apartment electronically. Thank you EQR and 70 Greene for a great 2yrs"
