"I needed tiles for a reno project, and was referred to this tile store by an electrician on my project, so decided to come check it out this past Sunday afternoon. Upon entering, I was happy to see a decent size showroom, and was greeted by a warm receptionist, to whom I explained I’d like to browse for a while before seeking help; she kindly left me alone and came back to check up on me shortly after; we then exchanged a few more pleasant conversations around design options. About 5 mins later, a male personnel came up to me and asked if I own a tile store; I answered no and explained I’m here for material for a reno. I continued browsing, and snapped all together 3 photos of tile combos I’m interested in, and sent them to my partner to make sure he’s good with the designs I chose. I was then approached again by the same male personnel, who told me photos are not allowed in the store. I genuinely didn’t know, as there was no warning sign in the store, but agreed to stop. I browsed a little more, and continued texting my partner about the design options because it’s a joint reno project we have, and he couldn’t make it to the store. I only had time to visit one showroom this Sunday and needed material the following week, and decided to visit this place instead of HomeDepot since the trusted electrician recommended it. What a mistake it was, especially after an hour trek to get here. Apparently the male personnel who turned out to be the owner (or so he claims) didn’t believe what I said, because ~10 mins later, he said to me I have to leave the store since I was taking photos of the entire store and sharing info. I was baffled because I only took 3 photos and there’s phone and text record of this I could show him; he didn’t want to see them. I left the store feeling attacked for no reason but prejudice. I then walked into the design store next door (the receptionist had informed me earlier that I could find other material for my reno, next door). After browsing a few minutes, the same owner from next door walked up to me and said this was his store too, insinuating I shouldn’t be there. I felt unwelcome and left immediately. Never had I thought I give off vibe of being a tile store owner in NYC or have the potential to be a pricing spy. Jokes aside, it was all in all a very unpleasant and upsetting experience. I’m still confused why sharing a few photos and pricing of the tiles is a concern; I later checked the website the receptionist informed me about, and see that pictures and pricing are posted online anyway (although the website appears to be buggy and I didn’t find all the products I saw in the store). In either case, as designers would advise, it’s better to visit and check physical samples. If you do choose to visit this store, please be careful not to take pictures or text while you’re there!"
