"Dr. Shalana O'Brien will convince you that you need more surgery than required, lie in the in your medial records on your wants as well as how she will perform the surgery, then make multiple mistakes dramatically reducing your quality of life then not be held accountable. She told us that she has over 10 years of experience with thyroid and parathyroid surgery, yet later find out she only graduated a couple of years prior on oncology school. Claimed to be the only doctor at that time that does these surgeries at Roswell Park, yet I found out later there were others there performing those surgeries during that period of time. Claims that she will take 1/2 of your thyroid, check to make sure both parathyroids on that side are in tact, healthy and have no loss of blood flow. Tells you that if there is any issues with either of them, she will stop the surgery at only 1/2 the thyroid being removed to keep you from having further damage and potential health issues. There is less then 3% chance that during a thyroid removal that you will have 3 parathyroids removed during thyroid removal surgery. She removed 4 and only noticed one (sending part of it in for pathology to verify what actually she removed). She then transplanted the one partial parathyroid. There is a 93% chance that the transplant will take, yet several years later there we are out of hope to get a single fully functioning parathyroid out of 4 being "accidently" removed. 3 whole parathyroids were found in pathology. Claims during surgery that she saw 3 of them there fully intact. When talking to us after pathology found 3 parathroids with the thyroid she removed that she never had this happen before... and that she didn't see them attached to the Thyroid when she removed it. This last statement completely contradicts the first thing she told us as well as the routine of how the surgery is safe and how she keeps it safe. Tons of health issues due this surgery while this so called doctor says this is no big deal and you just have to take calcium. Please check the very larger list of common medical issues associated with this doctors complete lack of competence. You will also see tons of future issues due to what this doctor has done. Other mistakes include not putting my wife's heart meds on the list of meds to be given while in the hospital, then when she corrects it, she prescribes and has the hospital give my wife the incorrect meds, even though she had a complete list on file. This we found out through the billing after the wrong meds were given. She put my wife on 12,000 mg a day of calcium after the surgery then claims the surgery or nothing she did could be causing the extreme headaches and severe illness my wife was experiencing. While the FDA recommends 1,200 mg of calcium a day, the doctor did not make a typo for she laid out specifically the dosages to take and the frequency, in which added up to 10x the daily recommended dosage. There were a great many other issues with our experience here. I highly suggest avoiding this doctor as well as Roswell Park Cancer Institute. There is no accountability. Any malpractice issues does not go to court, but to a panel at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. This is like having the prisoners in charge of the prison. Please take your health issues to a place that will make sure you are properly cared for."
"Dr O'brien led the team that provided excellent care during my recent stay in RPCI."
