About the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association
The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association is a museum and tourist attraction located at 246 Old Walt Whitman Road in Huntington Station, New York, United States. The institution serves as a State Historic Site and Interpretive Center, dedicated to preserving the legacy of renowned ecopoet Walt Whitman. The WWBA 2024 Program Series, titled "Whitman’s Long Island: Then & Now – The Pine Barrens," explores Whitman's connection to Long Island's environment and addresses current environmental conservation issues facing the region.
The program series focuses on Environmental Justice issues for Long Island communities, including access to clean water, pollution-free environments, and the protection of natural lands. The first program in the series, "The Pine Barrens – Who’s Guarding our Long Island Treasure," highlights the importance of preserving the unique ecosystem of the Pine Barrens, which supports endangered species and provides vital resources such as drinking water.
The program features discussions led by environmental experts, readings of Whitman's ecopoetry and essays, and musical performances by singer-songwriter Linda Sussman. The event is made possible with support from Humanities New York, NY State Parks, Suffolk County, and the Town of Huntington.
The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association relies on donations to support its programs and community engagement efforts. Individuals interested in contributing can donate online or by mail to the address provided. Donations help ensure the continuation of the institution's educational initiatives and preservation efforts. Reviews of Walt Whitman Birthplace Association
"I recently discovered this charming little hidden gem, perfect for a leisurely visit. The interpretive center is impressively informative and well-organized. What really stood out was the staff – they were not only knowledgeable but also incredibly warm and welcoming. The house tour struck a perfect balance in length. It had been years since my last visit, despite living in the area, but I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it was. We spent a good two hours there, exploring at a relaxed and enjoyable pace. Highly recommend for a delightful experience!"
"I'd been meaning to visit this place for a while, but getting out to the suburbs of Long Island from Manhattan is a trek. Luckily, I finally got to see it on a nice day and arrived just in time for a fantastic tour. The tour guide was very entertaining and knew his stuff, and the house is in great condition. A highlight was seeing the lilac tree that grew "in the dooryard" and could be seen out the window right over Whitman's childhood bed. I didn't spend much time at the museum, as it was mostly stuff to read, but it was set up nicely and they had a few cool things, like a book signed by Whitman and a first edition Leaves of Grass, plus a fun gift shop. I highly recommend visiting this place if you're a fan of Walt Whitman!"
"The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association does an exceptional job of brining the place and the poet to vibrant life for its visitors. While Whitman only lived in Huntington Station during the first four years of his life, the influence of his birthplace and his first formative years is clearly on display."
"Excellent museum guide! We arrived late but she went over the missing sections of the house at the end of the tour. Interesting details give you insight into the life of the family and the house at the time. Highly recommended."
"Well-maintained New York State historic site. Walt Whitman Jr. was born here and lived here until he was 4, before moving to Brooklyn. There are a couple artifacts from that time and original pieces on display. They also have art program there. The guides are very knowledgeable and friendly. You can park next to the house (about a dozen spaces) or along the side street."
