Reviews of Dr. Maryann B Schaefer Psychotherapy
"A truly great therapist that helps, especially with couples therapy and anxiety. Thank you so much"
"A wonderful therapist on Long Island, Maryann truly helped with my anxiety and depression."
"Dr. Schaefer is a wonderful therapist. I worked with her for many years and it is because of the work I did with her that I am the person I am today. She inspired me to believe in myself: to give myself the space to learn who I am and who I want to be in the world. With her kind, persistent and unflagging support, we navigated some challenging times and I came through stronger than I ever thought possible. She has an amazing ability to be both tough and deeply compassionate and she will never let you give up on yourself. My Dad and I also worked together with Dr. Schaefer for several years. We healed a relationship that felt estranged in the beginning, but became very close by the time we were complete. Finally, not only would I recommend Dr. Schaefer highly, I have already sent multiple friends to work with her and they have all had meaningful experiences. If you are ready to make your life into something genuine, and are ready to do the work to get there, I cannot imagine a better therapist to walk along beside you. Together, you will get there."
"I would NOT seek the services of Maryann Schaefer, Psychologist, unless you desire to have her immediately identify a “great emotional disparity” with her client, my medical professional spouse, and not effectively address the grave emotional issues with my spouse, her client, nor fail to treat, refer, nor properly address the stated emotional disparity with any discernible or tangible therapeutic interventions. As a fellow medical professional, I would not recommend her services and I am wholly disappointed that my medical professional spouse was under the care of Maryann Schaefer for four months. I was never her client, my medical professional spouse was her client, yet, after four months of sessions with my medical professional spouse, she invited me “in session” on an unsecured, non-HIPAA compliant Zoom link, set up by her client, my spouse, also a medical professional, with no password. HIPAA compliance was compromised. As a thirty year ‘researcher’ of my spouse, Ms. Schaefer asked for my input on my medical professional spouse, her client, inviting me into session. It was a powerfully negative experience. My recommendation: seek psychology care from another provider. An important part of good therapy is the ability to listen to understand. “Listening to respond” is not a helpful nor therapeutic intervention for a mental wellness professional. As a therapist, it is imperative to be an exquisite listener, most especially when the client’s spouse of near 30 years was asked to provide insight, after four months of solo therapy by her client, my medical professional spouse. Ms. Schaefer started the session asking of me, “Describe to me how you feel emotionally regarding your spouse?” Both Ms. Schaefer and my medical professional spouse referenced my LCSW, a Complex PTSD trauma expert as a “gold digger” as my case was multifaceted and required intensive therapeutic sessions, yet when addressed, denied this statement of truth. Their subsequent text exchange post-session otherwise confirms her blatant unprofessionalism. At my bequest, after our one “joint” non-HIPAA compliant session and four months of therapy, my spouse terminated care with Maryann Schaefer due to no discernible therapeutic response."
