Reviews of The Sound of Sailing - Sailing with Tom NYC
"I was in NYC for two weeks and my weekend sailing lesson with Tom and Max was the highlight of the trip! Learned a new skill, listened to good music, and knocked back a few beers while looking at some of the most spectacular views of New York. Would definitely recommend."
"A fantastic way to start, finish, or extend your trip to the New York-Long Island Sound Area by adding something that is easy-to-arrange, fun, and different to your strolls on the sidewalks of Manhattan!!! - all courtesy of the convivial Captain Tom who somehow miraculously manages to be simultaneously knowledgeable, interesting, and droll, and yet able to convey what's needed on the voyage of "As One Does" in a calm, friendly manner. Highly recommended - Long Island Sound and sailing at sunset on Tom's comfortable and well-appointed craft proved so pleasurable! The well-designed Sound of Sailing website gives an excellent sense of Tom's absolute proficiency at all that he does. My wife and I had come to the New York area for a brief 3 1/2 day, early August, trip - we decided to stay in Flushing, New York, where hotel prices were less expensive. We unexpectedly found ourselves walking around streets in a bustling neighborhood chock-full of kaleidoscopic sights, sounds, and aromas, rich with Asian-Americans and great food. After heading towards New York City by subway the next day, we proceeded out to the Queens waterfront, in clear, not-too-hot, weather to behold amazing views over the East River towards the Chrysler Building and UN complex. We then ate nearby at Blend on the Water restaurant - an excellent 3-course Latin-American fusion lunch for $29 - and managed to fit in a trip to see 5 diverse and intriguing exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art's PS 1 branch in Queens, before heading to a summer night concert at a Citi Field, not far from our hotel in Flushing. Next day we went out to Oyster Bay, Long Island for lunch and strolled around the beautiful Caumsett State Historic Park in Huntington on Long Island Sound. - well worth it and not crowded. The next morning, a Saturday, we went on a nine o'clock tour of Theodore Roosevelt's home along Long Island Sound (need to book well-in-advance) - the guide was excellent, the house - fascinating with a diverse collection of things from all over the world - and walking around the grounds to the sound made for an enjoyable summer outing. But as it turned out: our last tourist foray was the best of the 3 1/2 days, as we still had time that Sunday to meet Tom over at New Rochelle in the afternoon for a sail on Long Island Sound (not much traffic getting there either). It was a great experience, we appreciated how helpful and accommodating Tom was to our wishes. My wife loved taking the helm under Tom's beneficent guidance. It was a wonderful, unhurried way to end out trip and the sunset didn't hurt. We still had plenty of time for our two-hour trip home through southern New England and it was virtually without hassle since ending the trip in New Rochelle allowed us to avoid the worst of New York weekend traffic. So, if you live in New England, leaving the New York area close to the Connecticut border has its pluses. The trip overall - though short and compact - was a blast - very varied and wonderful. Even if you already know Manhattan well, there is much fun stuff to do in the New York City area if you think outside-the-box a bit and topping things off with a sail on "As One Does" is a perfect way to ensure trip dreams turn into success-strewn reality. Thanks Captain Fallows. Timothy Mixter"
"A magical day sailing in the Long Island Sound for our whole family with the best captain ever! Tom Fallows was not just an expert at the art of sailing but also the most fun and mindful captain we could have asked for. He kept everyone’s likes and preferences in mind while charting the course for our fantastic journey out on the beautiful waters. The weather was perfect and the views breathtaking. Thank you so much Tom for making this special birthday outing for our son (and the whole family) such a wonderful treat. You are truly the best!!"
"Recently went out for a sail with Tom and his son Max for day on the Long Island Sound. What a masterclass the day was. Tom is an excellent teacher and a great guide. He along with his son Max are able to get the boat ready in a timely manner and are very knowledgeable when it comes to boating etiquette. The day started slow with little to no wind but it didn’t matter. As we drifted along, Tom told stories about the surrounding areas and islands. As we neared the end of the day searching for some wind, it finally picked up. Tom is very hands off when it comes to his teaching, but is always by your side giving a guiding ear. He will jump in when he has too, but if you want to learn how to sail this is the guy."
