Reviews of Erie County Medical Center Psychiatry
"ECMC psych center is corrupt. Some of the nurses will mock you. I've overheard Nicole calling someone a "failure at life" under her breath. Some of the psychologist like (Matthew L. Ruggieri, MD) will mock you, suggest insults in the form of questions and wont respect your words. They will inject you at random and allow other patients to enter your room while you are sedated. They will prolong your hospitalization as an experiment. Most of these depraved people are only here for a paycheck and entertainment. If you love yourself and a person of concern, DO NOT SEND THEM HERE."
"terrible place that is very neglectful. staff doesn’t care and they are just making mental health worse for the mentally ill."
"Never take your loved one to this horrible place, they sit the patients on the floor because they don't have beds or chairs, they leave them without food and the only thing the nurses do is treat them badly and talk nonsense among themselves instead of helping them. Not to mention that the “doctor” never helps the patient or anyone. It's a disgusting place."
"ECMC's psychiatric emergency room and inpatient facilities, in my experience, consist of *egregiously long wait times* and a *malicious attitude towards patients* by many staff/nurses/doctors. The treatment was exceptionally unacceptable in *CPEP*, the center’s Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program. This program is a highly unsanitary and ridiculously overwhelmed facility to which “at-risk” mental health patients are sent, many times against their own wishes, without access to the Internet, their phones, or many basic needs until they are officially sent to an inpatient psychiatric ward (if needed). It took many hours before I was even seen by a psychiatric doctor in CPEP (at least 27 hours, if I counted correctly), and I had to remain there for several days past what I should have (they profusely say that “no beds upstairs are available”) in extremely unhygienic and discriminatory environment. The bathrooms *regularly ran out of soap* and there were *unnecessary restraints* such as complicated pipelines to receive their daily or as-needed (PRN) medication, a bandaid, a days-old, soggy sandwich or just some hand sanitizer. Many patients were quite sick with potentially contagious *respiratory* and *digestive conditions* altogether in an enclosed space, with no one being required to wear a mask, and no one is promptly seen by a board certified medical doctor. The staff did not provide me with an ADA compliant shower until I had been at ECMC for 7 whole days, despite having my PCP ordering the accommodations to help me recover from my chipped fibula. I did not receive my prescriptions and treatment that I needed for my disability in a just, efficient or reasonable fashion. Their medical evaluation and treatment processes, in my observations as well as other patients’, consist of underplaying various findings and aspects of one’s behavior and personality and overplaying certain personal or medical details. Discriminatory treatment based on sex, age, and disability status was rampant, including many staff member’s wildly inappropriate behavior and the frequent use of insults and inconsiderate word choices such as a staff member gossiping about me, joking that I “peaked” physically (in terms of attractiveness). These complaints do not apply to all staff members; in fact, many of the nurses and social workers, especially in the inpatient facilities, were genuinely sincere, helpful, and incredible human beings, but virtually every valid point and unacceptable issue brought to someone’s attention was blamed on ECMC being “understaffed.” I’d sure love to know what the head doctor/director/CEO or whoever is in charge of this institution’s net worth is… ECMC has many exceptional staff, nurses, and doctors, BUT it seems that the mental health sector of the hospital is still the lowest priority on ECMC’s radar, and very few resources are actually allocated to the programs they advertise. If anyone is struggling with mental health I highly recommend *visiting your PCP*, seeing a *trusted counselor, visiting a different immediate care facility such as WellNow or visiting BPC or BryLin*, reaching out to *Buffalo’s Mental Health PEER Connection* (which provides free transportation to and from the center) or calling/texting *988* for the Suicide & Crisis Line. I think they are finally starting to pay attention to many mental health patients’ concerns as a result of the firestorm of recent controversies and complaints, but I still wouldn’t recommend ECMC to even my worst enemy anytime in the near future. -CodyFernFan"
"prison is the only word I can use to describe this awful place. currently working on getting law enforcement involved, the nurses are EXCRUCIATINGLY unprofessional and make it painfully obvious that they are there solely for a paycheck. This is not to say for every nurse, however the nurses I had to deal with a talk on the phone with were horrific. The nurses watch the patients try to harm themselves, and laugh about it. They refuse you any privacy or basic human rights, and WILL NOT keep you safe. If you are struggling with mental help or suicidal thoughts, do yourself a huge favor by staying miles away from this “crisis center”."
