Reviews of Costello Eye Physicians & Surgeons
"I had a Lasik procedure here last week. I went to both the Rome and Oneida offices. They were amazing! I got in and out at all of my appointments - virtually no wait times - and the nurses were very helpful and knowledgeable."
"Dr. Daniel Colino has been my eye doctor and my parents eye doctor forever. He and his staff (Carol and Mrs. Marion Colino) are the consummate professionals. They are very thorough, patient, answer any questions you have and appointments run pretty much on schedule. I would highly recommend him."
"Go some where else or perform the surgery yourself. He did not do anything right. It was a cattle call where he had so many surgeries surgeries that the guidelines were out the window. After he grabbed my thumb and pulled it up and moved my fingers into a thumbs up! Does he think this would hold up in court as proof of my satisfaction? Well I'm holding up another finger for him right now!"
"John Costello, Jr., DO performed cataract surgery on my right eye at Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton, NY on August 9th, 2018. He next performed cataract surgery on my left eye on August 14th, 2018 at the Griffins Surgery Center in Rome, NY (of which he is a part owner). When I first met Dr. Costello in his Hamilton, NY office on July 16th, 2018 (to aid me in deciding if I would utilize him for my surgery) he was impressively concerned and solicitous. This first meeting was what is commonly called in the medical profession a “meet and greet”. I have since learned that at least in the case of Dr. Costello, it should more appropriately be termed a “sales and marketing meeting”. He assured me that he would pay careful attention to my medical concerns and history of allergic reactions to various anesthesia medications. Further he said that I could rest assured that “he would treat me as if I were his own brother”. Now two months post surgeries I can only say god help his brother. On my last meeting with Dr. Costello (on August 15th, 2018) I told him that I considered him to be borderline incompetent. My comment was prompted by the fact that although he claimed I could see perfectly after the surgeries, I could not, in fact, see very well at all. Additionally, I found that the little I could see at that time varied from hour to hour. I could not see well enough to drive and I could not then or now see well enough to read comfortably (even using the eReader that I have been using for the last several years). However, the most appalling part of his work was that he had neglected to transfer any information about my various allergies to anesthesia medications (one of which resulted in a cardiac arrest at the age of eighteen) to his own partially own Griffiss Surgery Center. Fortunately, the attending anesthesiologist was very good and carefully reviewed my long history of medical allergies (exactly what Dr. Costello had assured me he would do, but failed to do). The assisting medical staff at both the Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton, NY and at the Griffiss Surgery Center in Rome, NY were very good. Also, on my August 15th, 2018 post surgical visit with Dr. Costello, he had the audacity to tell me that there was nothing wrong with my vision and that “I was simply being negative and refusing to acknowledge the great improvement he had made in my vision”. I was scheduled to have a final appointment with Dr. Costello on Monday, August 16th, 2018 but before that I chose not to do so because I no longer trusted a single word that he said. Instead, on the Friday before that scheduled appointment I went to see my optometrist who examined me and informed me that it appeared I had blisters in the retina of my right eye and a probable retinal detachment in my left eye. He further informed me that I needed to see a retinal surgeon no later than the following day or I risked permanent blindness. I have now had three visits to the retinal surgeon and an additional visit to my optometrist. The retinal surgeon has mostly repaired the damage. However, at my last visit to the optometrist he said “you will not want to hear this, but you now have a secondary cataract in your left eye”. I will have to continue to see the retinal surgeon to prevent that from getting worse. So now (two months after my second surgery with Dr. Costello), I find that my vision is no better than it was before the surgery, rather it is worse. So, if you were to ask me for my opinion about Dr. Costello, I would say, find yourself a more careful and attentive surgeon (preferably one who actually cares more about his patients' surgical outcomes rather than one who (in my opinion) cares more about his surgical income). Choosing Dr. Costello for my cataract surgery was one of the worst decisions of my life."
"The wait time in this location is absolutely unacceptable. We were not late for our appointment (though, to be fair we were not early - we arrived at 9:29 for a 9:30 appointment) and we are currently still waiting here at almost 11:00. There are still people in front of us who have been here since before we got here. Absolutely no excuse for such gross overbooking."
