Reviews of Hutchings Psychiatric Center
"Medical neglect- she died of severe constipation and bowel obstruction. the girl was 14"
"Stop allowing patients with severe schizophrenia to have virtual appointments. This is becoming neglect at this point and allowing those with this severe condition to go years without an in person exam to be able to see what actually state they are in is criminal. We have watched our brother get so much worse in the last two years and we have no idea what to do to help as this place has stopped caring. We are so scared from the obviously Ill behavior that my brother has displayed for years at this point (pandemic meant he was able to get away with not being seen regularly or at all). We have no resources to get him help and this place is supposed to be treating him but he has gotten so so much worse in the few two years it is scary. Something needs to be done and with cases like his (that was really scary thb) he needs to be physically seen and resources (like who to contact) need to given to the families for when things get obviously bad. Please step it up and help him!! They are really just leaving those who come here for help behind during this pandemic."
"The first time I went here was for being suicidal. This place helped me honor my life. I was treated like a human being and the staff were very nice. Second time I came here was for being a violent person. It was a better alternative than jail. It was my "scared straight" program. About a year later I was a much, much, much better person. Thank you for helping me straighten my life out! Only negatives I give this place is it has increased my paranoia of going back every year in October. I also had a HUGE fear of the police from 2016-2020."
"I left here more suicidal and terrified than when I entered. The staff was rude and made fun if us. The psychiatrist made me pretend I believed in God or else he thought I wasn't mentally stable. Once I started agreeing with his religious statements he said he thought I was doing better. The boys and girls always were doing inappropriate things to each other and the staff didn't care. When one of the patients got upset and was threatening to throw something (mind you both staff and other patients were making fun of her often and she was not aggressive until about a week or two into her stay because of their actions) the staff ran behind the other patients and left them exposed to be attacked. They also changed my medicine after I explicitly said I didn't want to."
"Hutchings was not the best experience. I was sent to the psychiatric hospital to evaluate my suicide risk. There are some very nice people, including an amazing chaplain/life coach who spends a lot of time helping patients (Reverend Stone is an amazing man). There was also an amazing psychologist named Dr.Von who really gave his best effort. Some of the therapy assistances are extremely kind and only want the patients to get better. The problems I have with the place is that for the most part the hospital acts as a prison for people who commit suicide. A lot of times being suicidal is not only neglected from treatment but seemingly discriminated upon, many of the T.A.s don't help treatment and instead complain about their working conditions or force their opinions about religion or politics on us. They seem to not understand that everyone comes from a different background. In my opinion I believe that having “treatment” forced upon someone is a bad concept if that “treatment” creates more problems than it solves. Like I was kept in the facility for over 6 months for little to no reason, and it destroyed my life academically. Now it has become very stressful for me to reorganize my life after those overextended hospitalizations, they tried to put me in residential even though they had no idea how it would effect my overall life. I tried to explain how this could negatively effect important aspects of my ability to obtain a successful career, but they didn’t care. The psychiatrist almost never cares about the patient and so doesn’t the social worker. The nurses are always unprofessional and always call us “immature” when asking for help, even though we literally pay for the “treatment” with our insurance. It is like they simply stole our money. They have a union that simply allows them to do anything to the patient without getting fired. Luckily some of them can get kicked off the unit for misbehaving, but they would verbally attack the patients later if they get back to the unit. Some nurses and therapy aids would make fun of the patients and then punish the patients if they retaliate. My insurance had to pay thousands of dollars for their salary, yet they seem to think it is ok to bite the hand that feeds. Sadly the doctors don’t care about the actual treatment and will simply send the patients to suffer for months on end with little to gain. Luckily now I have been able to get into university, but since I have been out of class for years because of Hutchings it has been a rough transition. The doctors need to understand what they are doing to the patients, this is just irresponsible. Also outpatient tends to be filled with similar immature personalities who care so little about patients, it has been the best feeling to cut ties with their service. The New York Health Department ran hospitals like these with no sanitation precautions what so ever for years, now there are innocent people suffering from Covid-19 for this reason. Please make sure to avoid Hospitals like these until the pandemic is over and they actually care about the wellbeing of the patients who are forced here."
