Reviews of Novant Health New Hanover Behavioral Health Hospital
"I went in for a routine obgyn appointment at 32wks pregnant and told my obgyn how I had been feeling. Anxious, depression, intrusive thoughts and panic attacks. And she told me I should be seen right away by a psychiatrist rather than wait months to see one in town. So I went here down the street. Thinking I would talk to someone, get back on my medication and get back on the road to go about my day. No, they stuck me in a dark room with no windows or lights while I waited for the psychiatrist. With other patients who were totally not themselves. Some guy kept peeking in people's rooms, another started bathing himself in the toilet. I was so scared and afraid for my unborn baby. The psychiatrist finally came and talked to me and after she spoke to my therapist, she thought it would be best if I volunteer admitted myself, everything would be faster and smoother. Which it was. I only stayed two days instead of 3-7 like she said it could be. But it was two awful days. They moved me to the admissions rooms and the rooms were just as disgusting as the ER psych rooms. They were absolutely depressing. I don't know how anyone can mentally feel better after staying there for a second and I don't know how they can possibly imagine this place to be suitable for pregnant women with mental crisis or anyone for that matter. The crumbs were on the floor, the paint and dry wall were peeling, no color, it was so depressing. I get they are limited to decor or certain things due to people using certain things to hurt themselves, but It looked like something you'd see in a crazy psych ward in a horror movie. This stay honestly made me hesitant to tell anyone how I feel again because it was a scary place to be, especially while pregnant. I gave it two stars because the staff was very nice and did their jobs well, but the atmosphere was absolutely a nightmare. You could easily go more insane staying in there. . .they need to change the way they house their patients. Especially their pregnant ones."
"I feel vindicated seeing the other negative reviews. I admitted myself when I was suicidal several years ago and I really did feel like I was being treated like a criminal. It was an awful experience and it hurts my heart. People in the mental health field need to be compassionate and treat people as people."
"Worst experience a Mother can experience taking her son for voluntary admission for help with paranoid schizophrenia. He is put in handcuffs while being terrified about going anyway, is absolutely no threat and days later is trying to escape because of more fear and paranoia while I am there to visit, and I witnessed this: He was tackled by 4 huge security guards and then put into 4 point restraints and tied to a bed and put into a small closet-like holding room for 48 hours for punishment while he screamed for his mother and begged them let him go to the bathroom and to see me…they refused him and did not even let him go to the bathroom. After 48 hours and I was allowed to finally see him he was broken beyond belief and still in the same Clothes stinking with urine stains all over him. The next week, They also put him in a police car, tried to transport him to Winston Salem to an undisclosed hospital there without notifying me or without his permission..they brought him back while I was trying to visit him not knowing they had him in route to Winston Salem, because the police officer wanted another driver with him…thank goodness for that ..but his Dad and myself and especially …. He were traumatized beyond belief. He is still terrified and because of this I can never recommend volunteering anyone to go to this hospital For anything except abuse."
"We took in my preteen child. We were told in the ER it was best for her to be seen voluntarily and then they could fast track therapy. All staff who saw my child in the first 18 hours agreed she would need out patient care. A med student evaluated her, then promised the Psychiatrist on staff would be by in 10 minutes for his own evaluation. 3 hours later he showed up, never spoke to my child, and informed us he was sending her to an intensive in-patient facility and we had no choice. Other staff members advocated for her but he refused to change his mind or even see us. He sent a sovial worker in his stead who wasn'tthe least bit comforting or knowledgeable. She treated us as if we were petty people complaining about coffee order, not parents fighting for their child. They transported my preteen in a prison transport van wearing only a thin paper outfit provided by the hospital all the way to Jacksonville. My child in crisis was treated like a criminal and an inconvenience the entire time. She is on an involuntary hold for something the med student wrote down incorrectly. And is possibly under this hold illegally, as it takes TWO evaluations and she was never evaluated by Psychiatrist or another doctor. Only the med student. Beware of seeking help for your children here. They truly don't care what is in their best interest."
