"I came to Dr. Shearer with an autoimmune thyroid disorder: over active thyroiditis or graves disease and several gut issues. The initial testing revealed nothing new from previous tests, but Dr. Shearer also ordered iodine urine test even though my iodine blood levels showed normal. The urine test showed slightly low. After an hour consultation with him where I shared my entire history and gut issues he had two recommendations: to take extremely high doses of iodine and lithium stating that he saw good results with his patients on these. Nothing for the gut, no detox protocol. Well iodine is great for those having an under-active thyroid. It does destroy the cells infected by the Epstin-Barr virus in the thyroid but at the doses he prescribed my thyroid would have went into overdrive and I would have experienced a lot of side effects form cell kill off. From all the studies, medical doctors I talked to and research I have done lithium is not an empirically studied and accepted treatment for any thyroid disease. It is prescribed to schizophrenia patients but lithium actually destroys their thyroid and they have to get on thyroid medication. With this treatment Dr. Shrearer would have effectively made my thyroid function very difficult. he failed to see that EBV the virus actually responsible to cause thyroid issues and making my thyroid function less optimally is not the answer. Instead of addressing the virus that already infected the thyroid and causing all my symptoms Dr. Shearer's treatment set out to destroy my already ailing thyroid even more. If you want to find healing for your thyroid stay away from this doctor. I am not sure where he gets his treatment ideas from but it is not empirically tested and accepted treatments and we are not guinea pigs, at least that is not why we pay top dollar to be one."

"I found Dr. Shearer after much research of functional medicine providers and naturopathic doctors in the Raleigh area- I've read hundreds of reviews and done hours of research. I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's and prescribed Levothyroxine prior to seeing Dr. Shearer.
