Reviews of Asheville Medicine & Pediatrics
"Dr. Bernstein was kind and honest. I felt comfortable with him. The entire staff was friendly, professional, and easy to work with. They care about the overall well-being of their patients. And their check-in process was easy. As someone needing a "go-to" doctor, and partner in managing my health, I couldn't have asked for more."
"A close relative recommended Dr. Kottoor to us when we were looking for a family doctor. These reviews gave me pause but I trust my relative. I’m glad we went and I highly recommend Dr. Kottoor. He asked the right questions, was kind and patient. And most of all, myself being female, he LISTENED. My teenaged daughter also felt comfortable with him and that’s important to me as well. I don’t want to invalidate any negative reviews, but if your appt is with Dr.Kottoor, you’re in great hands."
"I've been hesitant to post reviews because I grew up going to this clinic and wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt, but the absolute lack of care I've experienced has made me write this. I've been going to this practice since I was 8 years old, and the past 3 years the care I've received has gone downhill. After getting referred to a specialist by Dr. Niccolini for an ADHD diagnosis, nearly every time my prescription has to be renewed it is a massive uphill battle. Because of administrative mistakes and a flippant attitude, I've had to unexpectedly go cold turkey on a necessary medication on more than one occasion. The side effects of starting and stopping it suddenly is usually horrendous, and has caused issues in my everyday life at work, but generally their office doesn't care. Additionally, they do not even the bare minimum for mental health care. As long as you aren't actively trying to end your life, they don't seem to care! My last visit is the absolute last straw. I spent a large amount of time waiting for the doctor. Which while that is understandable, spending barely 5 minutes in the room with one foot out the door while making it impossible to discuss any concerns I had, is not. Then on top of my copay, trying to bill me additionally and quoting services like "diet consultation", when nothing to do with my weight, bmi, diet, or any other concerns of that nature were discussed. They will ignore you, make you fight for every iota of care until you're too tired to bother them, and try and bill you and insurance for services not given."
"I had a great first-time appointment with Dr. Kottoor. He was extremely patient, helpful and thorough. He took all the time needed to carefully address my questions and concerns and made me feel that he truly cares about me as a patient and a person. My husband sees him as well and has also had only wonderful things to say about Dr. Kottoor. I’m very glad we found him as our new provider…seeing him is well worth the drive across town and I’m sure that our family will be loyal long-term patients."
"I've been taking my kid here for 10 years and the only reason for doing so is convenience. It's close to where we live and one thing I will say for them is they're usually pretty good about getting you in on short notice but the price you pay is a long wait. Beyond that, some of their reception staff are friendly and others not so much. The two female physicians have always been excellent. However, Joshua Bernstein I find to be arrogant and dismissive. More than once he has asked me a question, interrupted me during my answer and argued with me about my answer, as if there is no way that he could possibly be wrong. I may not be a medical expert but I am an expert on my child. In my opinion, Dr. Bernstein seems to lack even the most basic of listening skills. I guess he would be deprived the pleasure of hearing his own voice. There's a huge difference in the level of service that I see now versus 10 years ago. Unfortunately, they have succumbed to the same "profits over patients" business model that so many medical offices seem to follow. Constant overbookings with the expectation that patients will wait indefinitely. If you dare complain, there's always an attitude and an excuse. Always an emergency when the truth is they are just scheduling too many patients at the same time and it shows in the level of service because it's like this every time you go now. My wait limit is now 15 minutes after my appointment time but make no mistake about it, they expect to be paid no matter if you saw the doctor or not. Beyond 15 minutes, I make no guarantee that I will wait. It depends upon the circumstances. At least twice, I've taken my child to the Park Ridge emergency room instead of this doctor's office because the wait was much shorter. Sad when it's actually faster to go to the emergency room then to your physician's office! If you go to this practice, be prepared for a hit and miss scenario with the reception staff. One time you'll get someone great and another time you get someone that obviously hates their job. Then you'll be taken back to a room where you'll wait well beyond your appointment time and should you choose to stay longer it'll be just about the time that you are ready to give up that a doctor comes in. I sincerely wish I had better things to say about this practice because they used to be good 10 years ago. I felt lucky to have found them. Now, I cringe every time I have to pick up the phone and schedule an appointment with them! It's just become a very unpleasant experience!!! Sadly, until I find a better option, I will be back."
