Reviews of Charlotte, NC Veritas Collaborative Eating Disorder Treatment Center
"I wish I had read the reviews before committing to Veritas. The front end seemed positive. Then went quickly downhill. We were told my daughter would be in groups with others her own age. I was told there would be groups designated for the loved ones that live in the home or are going through the emotions of children with an eating disorder and anxiety. They pushed to get my daughter in as quickly as possible. But day one, I went in expecting melt downs and resistance acclimating to the program. I supported Veritas by "trusting the process" because they were the "professionals". And gave it some time, with the adjustment of emotions. First day she did not know what she could bring in with her. I was not told I needed to be there which was fine, I was glad to be there to support on the first day. We were told food was provided. Food was also provided under the policy of "no food is bad food" policy and advised/scolded as a parent to refrain from encouraging more nutrient enriched food or encouraging to eat healthier options. First 3 days, lunch was ordered from local restaurants (Shake Shack, Showmars, Asian Restaurant to be exact). Sounds great to some maybe, and I tried to follow the process. My daughter barely ate before going into the program, and why we were there to begin with. There was no say on, hey do you mind not putting so much shrimp sauce on my rice? Or so much syrup on me French toast? I am not used to eating dairy, can you avoid the cheese or sour cream? I don't drink milk; I rather have water. As a mother I understood that this may work for some, but it was not working for my daughter. That alone was a little traumatizing to her. Also, she was in groups with others much younger and with different type eating disorders. We were also told they would get to go outside but didn't until I said something, and all of this they were in masks all day. We are all individual with our needs. But all was treated as one eating disorder diagnosis. Forced eating of things the body was not used too. Day 4 we showed up with no knowledge that there needs to be a packed lunch for Thurs/Friday. And still no group recommendations for parents of children with an eating disorder. Over the weekend, she was told to track her food on an app, and the info was never sent. Communication was not good through the whole process. The following week she returned, and tried to get through it, and her digestive system was so messed up, my daughter was in the ER , along with 3 to 4 days of pain trying to process the shock to her system. When I called and spoke to the nutritionist and I asked if they prepared the children/adults with possibilities of these changes and making sure their meals were balanced enough to process, and get enough fiber etc, I was told yes. The whole experienced traumatized and escalated what we were there for in the first place. Upon the email sent letting them know we will not be returning and looking for a better fit. A scary email was sent by her therapist Elouise about how this doesn't come recommended and that the insurance may have issues, because we her leaving was against their medical advice, and it would be unethical for them to send possible new referral for someone better fit for her care. My daughter is 21, and over 18. I am the responsible party for the insurance, and my daughter signed all the documents to keep me involved with the process. WHY, because she is just 21, and is still under the care of her mother, who is trying to help her with something she is not capable of doing herself. When speaking to the office manager Emily, she stated that she is the adult and left me out of the communication because she is over 18. When they didn't hear what they wanted to hear, the responses were non emotional, non-understanding, nor were their options to meet in the middle for better understanding. I would not advise ANYONE to go to Veritas. It caused more harm than good. They just don't seem to have it together enough to care for children with eating disorders and mental health challenges."
"i'm currently in php right now here. it's chill i guess. i like some of the staff (sierra) cause they're cool. only downside is they put you on the spot during meals like bruh no need to put my demons on speaker mode, i'm going through enough in my own mind and for you to just put me on the spot makes me feel highly embarrassed of my eating disorder and uncomfortable at the table. that's the only bad part i think. but the most of the staff is super chill (except for mealtimes). lowkey think renfrew is better but this is a good backup for php."
"My experience at Veritas Charlotte was quite short. This, however, did not prevent the treatment team and staff from leaving a lasting positive impression, with their empathy, competency, willingness to involve me in treatment decisions to the extent possible, and definitively non judgmental atmosphere. The program is rigorous and designed to challenge— prioritizing nutritional rehabilitation, safety, and stability while simultaneously integrating individual and group therapy to heal mind and not just body. I am fortunate to have met this team of qualified, caring experts."
"To preface, we fully understand that parents who seek treatment for EDs are often desperate to find help and will settle for a place that can get their child into treatment quickly. With the lack of available spots in many centers, this may very well be the place where your child ends up. If so, we hope that our review will help you. While we did not have a horrible experience, it was not a good one, and our child did not show significant improvement after 8 weeks at of PHP at Veritas. Veritas can handle the "eating" part but they drop the ball on the treating the psychological part, which is crucial for long term recovery. In short, the treatment here is not effective, the treatment team does not work well together and is disorganized, and they do not ensure that your child leaves the program equipped with the tools they need to handle the ED (we understand that an eating disorder is a multifaceted problem that cannot be solved overnight but little was done to ensure progress is being made). This was evident the very first day with a disorganized admission and orientation experience, which stands in contrast to our child's prior residential facility that had a well organized, informative, and comprehensive admission. If your child ends up at Veritas, you cannot blindly trust them to do the right thing. You will need to be active, hold the staff (therapist, nutritionist, doctor, even the director) accountable, ask for specific goals they intend your child to hit as they progress through treatment and actions required by you and the treatment team to get there. We had to schedule meetings with the director and therapist outside of the regular meeting times in order to receive information that should really be a standard part of treatment. They seemed unaware and surprisingly unconcerned that there are such gaps in their system. Our hope is that the issues we pointed out and the requests we made, such as goal-setting and step-down criteria, become an integrated part of this program. In addition, lack of compassion and attention is common at this treatment center, as is evident in other reviews. The “team” is inattentive to the patients' individual needs. The children in ED treatment are often mentally fragile and their families are struggling with the weight of this difficult situation but we never felt that the employees here were ever considerate of that. In order to effectively treat their patients, Veritas must reform their processes, team communication and coordination, and treatment methods."
