"An embarrassingly sub par insurance company.many years ago a mercury insured driver drove into the side of my car,at very slow speeds causing minimal damage.my car had just some scratches and needed probably one panel to be re painted.they ce to my house to inspect and said “we dont pay for existing damage” as if the damage was there before the accident,and cut me a check for 200 for damage to the wheel.im sure this is something they do regularly,so if you expect your insurance company to do the right thing and pay for repairs when you need to put in a claim,mercury insurance is likely somewhat of a gamble and likely not your best choice"

"I recently acquired a homeowner policy with Mercury via Policy Genius. It was quoted by Policy Genius effective September 2021, one month later they sent me a bill for an additional 30% of the annual premium. I called Mercury for reasoning as I noted they illogically increased my Replacement Cost to more than 2x my homes actual $108k cost/assessment/value. I inquired why they raised it by $60k to $240k and they said it wasn’t them, that Policy Genius (PG) requested the change. So I called PG and then blamed Mercury and said it’s a one-sided contract so they can unilaterally and without obstruction, raise it to any arbitrary amount they deem fit with my only recourse being to find a new policy provider. Further PG said it was raised by Mercury because construction costs have gone up. Once again though, this is a month time frame we’re talking about, costs didn’t rise 30-40% in a single month and even if they had, any decent insurance company will plan for some price volatility/inflation and forecast accordingly. In summary, I fell victim to a classic bait-and-switch. They knew there was a chance I wouldn’t notice the premium increase because it’s paid via escrow. They also knew behavior economics, and that I wouldn’t likely take the initiative to deviate from the default (find a new plan). Lastly, they were unable to give sound reasoning as to why the increase. Shame on me for trusting some financially minuscule non-recognizable insurance company, whose capacity or willingness to pay on a claim had I needed one, is questionable. Shame on me too for pursuing insurance through Policy Genius. They have a great concept but poor execution. Their sales tactics are aggressive at the least and border predatory- they incessantly called/emailed/texted me after they quoted providers and finally pressured me into choosing one that I wasn’t fully comfortable with. I would ask them for clarification on those companies and they would reply with “trust us”. I think there’s room in the marketplace for a company like PG, but right now they don’t fill that need well enough to honestly recommend. The whole experience was poor. I’m happily back to Liberty Mutual whom I’ve had great success with and have provided a fair but reasonable price."
