"Poplar place In June of 2022 we needed to find a new place to live. After looking at numerous apartments we found Poplar Place Apartments. We went up to see if we could view the apartments before applying or signing a lease. It took 30 minutes for someone to come to the door when it said they were open. We were then told that we couldn’t tour an apartment because we didn’t have an appointment. We had viewed other places that day with no appointment. It was our mistake for signing the lease… - Fast forward to July 2022 when we moved in. The carpets were gross, the appliances were dirty and from the 80s. The walls weren’t painted etc. our stove/oven was broken and it took 3 months to get a new one. - The floors were sinking. (We were on the third floor) there were slopes and holes and they just covered it with carpet. After bringing it to their attention, we were told “it’s just the floors settling). Our neighbor below us at the time, her ceiling was cracking in the spots/location that our floor was sloping. - Our AC worked maybe 2 months total out of the 8 months that we stayed in this apartment. - So many roaches. - You are unable to hook your washer and dryer up by yourself as they state “the connectors are old so we have our maintenance connector them”. We had maintenance connect them and they hooked the water lines up backwards. We only had hot water which destroyed the majority of our clothes. - The blinds when we moved in were broken. We complained nothing was done. Finally, they replaced them and tried to charge us for them. (They are the cheap plastic blinds) Their maintenance guy lied and stated he saw my 4 pound 3 month old puppy break them. Fast forward to when we moved out, they tried to charge us again for blinds ($50). We called numerous times to talk to them with no response. We called corporate no response. They sent it to collections. We stated what happened they took the blinds off the price and we paid for our water bill. - I got bit by a neighbors dog when walking to my apartment. - The area is not safe. You hear gunshots. Multiple strange vehicles that would park and never get out. Told them I was putting a ring door bell up. No holes it attached to the door in a case. Was told no it’s a fire hazard. This is your warning do not rent from Poplar Place. We got over charged ($1800 per month) for a run down not updated apartment (2 bedroom 2 bathroom) that was infested with bugs. There are so many other options for great apartments but this isn’t one of them. Look elsewhere. First 4 pictures are when we first moved in. (I had already cleaned the stove. The rest are when we left. Blinds clearly not broken."

"So far, Poplar Place has been a primarily positive experience. The building I live in was recently renovated. The reason it was recently renovated is because there was a fire that destroyed the previous units and everything had to be replaced except the windows. This wasn't mentioned when I toured. It doesn't bother me but someone else might want that info. For what it's worth, the renovation they did is pretty nice, if basic. Other details to note: There is no package center/receiving. Depending on your building, you might have a long walk to the mail pickup. The pool is not heated. Nearby University Lake is pretty but only open to the public Fri-Sun, and it's entirely closed in the winter. If you plan to bike into Carrboro or Chapel Hill frequently, it would be worth living slightly farther up the hill because the bike lane disappears before you go under the overpass. (Plus the hill is long and steep.) Update - there is a much better bike route. Instead of risking your life on Jones Ferry Road, take Old Fayetteville Road north to Poplar Ave."

"I moved in the first of August and everything ran smoothly from start to finish. The office staff is amazing and the maintenance crew is second to none. I love the view from our apartment particularly because of the well manicured landscape. I would recommend Poplar Place to anyone."

"We have been residents at Poplar Place for two years. Recently, over the weekend, our hot water heater stopped functioning. I called Ian, the maintenance supervisor, who was on emergency duty for the weekend. He immediately responded to my request for assistance and early Saturday morning began repairing the hot water heater. Such prompt action on a difficult issue was very much appreciated. My husband and I are very grateful for the wonderful team at Poplar Place, and especially for Ian's competent, professional support."

"Staying at Poplar Place was a positive experience. The apartments are pretty basic, but they are also decent. Which cannot be said about a lot of other apartments in the area. I never had any issues with the apartment and anytime I needed maintenance, they were able to help immediately. I want to mention that I never encountered any pests in the unit that I stayed in either. NO ROACHES. NO MICE. The community itself is fairly nice as well. Everything is landscaped and kept up with. The complex is always clean and there are never dumpsters overflowing for weeks at a time, an issue I've encountered at places in the past. The pool is pretty nice as well and is actually open instead of always closed "for maintenance". Another issue that I've encountered at several past residences. The complex is super convenient if you work at or attend UNC. The bus stop serves the JFX shuttle that runs from 5:30 am to 8:30 pm and gets you to UNC in about 7 minutes. The two ladies that work in the leasing office, Assistant Community Manager Elaine and Community Manager Michelle are great. Anytime I had a concern or question they were always attentive and caring. Elaine was very helpful, especially whenever I had a maintenance request. One time my AC went out and she was very urgent in taking the necessary steps to get it repaired. I think my ac was fixed within 20 minutes of making the call on a Saturday of all days. She even made a follow-up call to make sure that everything got fixed and stayed resolved. Overall great customer service and I appreciate these two employees because they continue to treat the residents like human beings even after they have signed the lease. If you're a working person or student and in need of a place to live where you don't have to worry about pests or having appliances broken for weeks on end for as decent a price as the area will allow, I would highly recommend Poplar Place."
