Reviews of Woodchuck Hostel
"DO NOT BOOK HERE. Booked and paid for this hostel two weeks in advance only to find out when we got into town that she gave away our room. She said check in was at 3pm and since we arrived at 5:30PM (after hiking 20 miles) that was considered late and even though we paid that she could give away our room since we didn’t text her. She then said she would Venmo us and seemed polite, but then she refused to answer any of our follow up texts/calls. I called from another hiker’s number and she immediately picked up and said “I’m so sorry I forgot about you but my accountant has to figure this out.” I asked why she didn’t at least give us a call before she gave our room away and she said because we’re section hikers she doesn’t have to? It’s clear we won’t be refunded and we’ll have to go through our credit card company. As we continued our section hike we met numerous others who had nothing but bad things to say about this hostel owner. Seems to have good reviews which is why we booked, and I’m not the type to leave reviews like this, but I’ve never had such a bad experience with a business. The last words the owner said to me after I asked her if she felt like other hiker should know about how she conducts business and she said “let karma be your guide.” Well, I’m doing that by posting this review. Avoid Woodchuck Hostel."
"Rita is literally the best. this is a GREAT hiker hostel. i came here with my family (4 of us) and it was kind of a funky situation because it's made to be a hiker hostel (for individuals) rather than for families but we still enjoyed it 10/10. pleasantly surprised by very good coffee and muffins also. love u Rita!!"
"Tl;dr: No laundry, no alcohol allowed on the premises (even if it's an empty can or an unopened can), poor layout, uncomfortably warm room, lukewarm breakfast, no phone, comfortable beds. The website advertised that we could do laundry there, and there were washers and dryers on site, but were not allowed to use them. This was unfortunate because all of our clothes were dirty after hiking and we had been banking on washing them at the hostel. We also asked to use the phone in the morning because none of us had any cell phone service there. We were not allowed to use the phone either. The website does not tell you this as far as I could tell, but they have an excessively strict alcohol policy. My sister and I had joined some new friends around a campfire with a couple of beers at their cabin last night. We walked back to the Woodchuck with a couple of empties and a couple of unopened beers that we were going to bring with us when we left the hostel the next day. As soon as we got back to the hostel, both the empties and the unopened beers were promptly confiscated. The hostel consists of two sleeping rooms and kitchen, all of which are open to one another. There is no indoor common area. Luckily we were the only people staying at the hostel last night, but I imagine if there were other people staying there it could get somewhat noisy as people come and go or use the kitchen. There is AC, but it either wasn't on at night or it wasn't working well because it was pretty warm. The owner was remodeling/painting the kitchen, so we couldn't use the kitchen. That was fine with us because we were looking forward to eating in restaurants after our five day hike, however I thought it was strange that they had not mentioned this when we called and booked the place. Also, for some reason we were told to use the outdoor shower and toilet instead of the indoor bathroom. I do not know why; the bathroom looked fine. Breakfast is at 9am. The waffles were good, the tater tots were fine, and I'm not sure how the eggs were because the lady making breakfast scrambled only about 2 eggs for the three of us. She also made all of us stay out of the kitchen while she cooked, then did not tell us that breakfast was ready, so the food was lukewarm by the time we poked our heads into the kitchen to check at 9am. The best part of this place were the beds. There were very comfortable!"
"We run Sufi Lodge in Troutdale VA and recommend Woodchuck's Hostel to all our Southbound AT hiker guests. Hostels are generally people friendly places offering incredible values and a relaxed atmosphere, they are some of the last true Americana left in our out of control boring corporate chain world. People should never try to compare them to the Hilton, different animal entirely. We are thinking of setting up a driving tour of the famous AT hostels and Woodchuck's and Woods Hole North of us would certainly be in the running."
"I love woodchucks so much! I have stayed at this hostel three years in a row for trail days. It's a quiet place to stay where you're guaranteed a quiet nights sleep. Chuck himself is a reasonable guy and goes out of his way for hikers. I will be back next year! Oh and Chuck is guaranteed to challenge someone to a game of Cornhole."
