Apple Valley Model Railroad Club
About the Business
The Apple Valley Model Railroad Club, located at 650 Maple Street in Hendersonville, North Carolina, is a popular tourist destination in Western North Carolina. Housed inside the Historic 1902 Hendersonville Railroad Depot, the club's HO layout features a Western North Carolina setting with a main yard in Asheville. The layout extends south to Spartanburg, S.C. and east to Spencer, N.C., with a Carolina and Northwestern railroad line that travels through Lenoir and Mortimer before joining the W.M. Ritter logging railroad at Edgemont. The club also has a G Scale All-Weather Layout located outside behind the Depot.
Using a Digital Command Control (DCC) radio system, members operate a wide variety of locomotives and rolling stock on the layout. The club hosts monthly prototypical operating sessions, giving visitors a chance to experience model railroading in action. The club welcomes group visits of 10 or more, with visitors able to request a visit date through the club's website.
Recent improvements to the layout include upgraded lighting in layout buildings, new furniture and interior items, and a fresh paint job on the historic Southern Railway caboose. The club accepts donations of scale model railroad equipment and historic railroad items, which are used to support the maintenance of the layout and museum. While donations are not tax-deductible, they are greatly appreciated by the club.

"The model railroad was awesome!!! It's a great hobby not just for kids. If you go to Hendersonville stop and take a look the guys that run the trains are great and knowledgeable."
"Love this place! Great place to bring the kids before going apple picking. It's free, but donations are encouraged. There are models of Eastern NC towns where the trains go through. It's really neat."
"Our visit to the Apple Valley Railroad Club was fantastic! The train exhibition was impressive with various scenes. My son loved the interactive fair/carnival area, operating the trains, and spotting familiar buildings in the replica of downtown Hendersonville. The attention to detail made our visit memorable and enjoyable. The employees are nice and helpful."
"Spectacular place and a real gem!! Helpful folks were able to help me with research questions, but they’re super fun and we’re so welcoming to everyone who came in. Admission is free but I would encourage anyone who visits to leave a donation to make sure they continue to keep this great place going for many more people to enjoy. For train lovers this is a must-see."
"This is the coolest place ever for kids of all ages… whether you’re 2yo or 82 you will certainly feel like you’re in a new and special place like no other. The people are most friendly and welcoming. Must see."
