Reviews of KATSUNO
"Very hidden location, super easy to miss. The fish is v fresh so I would recommend getting sashimi. Owners are very nice and accommodating. Perfect date night spot. If you're a sushi aficionado, this place isn't revolutionizing sushi, but that's not the point. It puts out a consistent, good product and serves their community."
"A true hidden gem of a restaurant! We had seen it mentioned a few times online but we were still surprised by how good it was. The quality of their raw fish is top notch, on par with many of the very expensive omakase restaurants popping up all over the city but at a more affordable price. We had the octopus & cucumber vinaigrette, magritte duck with yuzu kosho, and sashimi plate (20 pieces). All were fantastic but the sashimi was by far the highlight for us. We had asked about the salmon & sea urchin salad but unfortunately they couldn't make it that night as they didn't have enough sea urchin (which at least attests to the freshness of their ingredients!). We also asked the waitress/owner what she recommended, but she seemed hesitant to mention anything other than karaage, black cod, and tamagoyaki despite having a menu with more unusual options than what's offered at most Japanese restaurants in Queens. To be fair, every table around us seemed to be ordering those things, so I guess their main customer base is not very adventurous and she didn't want to recommend something that we might end up not liking. Service was fairly attentive considering they seem to be a husband-wife team with no other staff, but I imagine it could get a bit chaotic during busy times. They're reservation only, but we called a couple of hours before opening time and had no issues getting a table for Friday evening. Bring cash to avoid paying a fee!"
"An unexpected find in this part of Queens. The staff was very accommodating and made space for us to come with a baby stroller. We had the black cod, karage, and a selection of nigiri. Everything was delicious and the sushi was very fresh. Recommend the salmon and uni pieces. They also have a few Japanese craft beers - we had the matcha IPA and Yuzu ale, all delicious. Giving 4 stars mostly for the cleanliness around the bathroom area."
"I had the best time here. It is a hole in the wall and I almost missed the entrance because it looked like it was closed, but if Google maps says you're in front of the restaurant, you're in the correct place. They are also reservation only. I had the black cod and a matcha beer (never had a matcha beer before, but it was really good!). Definitely want to come back to try their sushi."
"Reservations only, don't bother walking in without one. The reason being is the experience of the meal not just the dining in part. BTW, no take out either. It's not allowed nor offered, if you must eat, then dine in is the only option. This is not meant to be snooty in any way. The pace of the meal and the attention they provide to each diner is part of the whole culture. It felt like I was eating in a friend's home. Polite and friendly, yet still relaxing and warm. The food just added to the whole experience."
