Reviews of Andrew's Bald
"Moderate difficulty trail mostly due to the elevation gain at the end of the return to the Clingmans Dome parking lot. I hiked at the end of July, and there were still flowers dotted along the trail. Bear activity around this time of year is high due to blackberries ripening along the ridge so keep a watch out."
"Andrews Bald is a grassy bald mountain top. It has an elevation of 5,920 feet above sea level. It is the highest bald in the Smoky Mountains. Start out at Clingmans Dome and take the Forney Ridge Trail just under 2 miles. Nice scenery along the way and beautiful view when you get to the bald."
"Nice, fairly easy hike. Worst section is the return hike at the end. I've done this hike a number of times - my favorite time to go is when the flaming azaleas are in bloom, usually mid June. The bald is a great place to relax, enjoy the views and have a nice snack or lunch."
"From the clingsman dome trailhead, take the Forney ridge trail to get to Andrews bald. It is approx 1.8 miles one way. It is not a strenuous hike, but i would say plan for 2 hours 30 mins for the whole trip (to the bald and back). The views are spectacular (from my last-trip experience). Unfortunately, it was cloudy and foggy this time, we and couldn’t get any mountain views on this hike. This is not a crowded hike at all, but if you want to get parking, i advice get there early. "1.8 miles both ways. Going in is mostly downhill. Be prepared for the uphill on the way out. Wear hiking shoes with good gripping for the uneven rocky paths. Remember to bring your water. Views partially obstructed by the growth of brush."
