Reviews of Pine Gap Trail at Linville Gorge
"Gorgeous trail to hike with river views. Very wet and steep in some parts. Saw no other people on the trail!"
"Camping here is great and the views are amazing."
"Short hike to the river and also a good access for those backpacking the Linville Gorge Trail or the Grand Loop. Fairly rugged trail that can be icy in the winter. A good introduction to the challenges of hiking in the gorge."
"The trail starts out rather innocuous, but changes quickly, as I found out this past Saturday. Being in shape will definitely help for this beautiful trail down to the river, where you can play. Also a good walking stick will help."
"This trail is described as the easiest trail down to Linville Gorge but don't let that fool you. This is a rough, unmaintained and unmarked wilderness trail. As is typical in Linville Gorge, be prepared for obstacles like downed trees and large boulders in the trail. There are a couple of places that require grabbing a nearby tree to help go up or down, even if you have trekking poles. I highly recommend trekking poles or boots with ankle support (or both). I usually don't use trekking poles because I find them annoying, but I bring them here and I'm glad for the extra support. Pine Gap Trail is the first access to Linville Gorge Trail if you're heading south on Kistler Highway. There is a nice little campsite when you get down to the river, but there is also a fork in the trail. Go right, on the higher up path through the boulder field. The end of Pine Gap Trail is where it joins with Linville Gorge Trail and Bynum Bluff Trail. Pine Gap is on a North facing side of the gorge, which means it is colder than other parts. In the winter, most of this side never sees sunlight and never warms up. This makes for some cool icicles but it could be dangerous. The weekend we went in February 2017, there were patches of ice even after the temperature went above 50 on the Linville Gorge Trail. On the plus side, I bet this side is cooler in the summer. There are plenty of streams on this trail for use as a water source while backpacking."
