"I visited this clinic on 1st April with covid-19 symptoms. A white phlebotomist entered the room and asked my name & date of birth to verify my identity while I was holding my chest because of chest pain & shortness of breath. My speech was slurred and I told her my name and DOB in my usual heavy South Asian accent. Phlebotomist, looked at me as if I am an alien from another planet while I pronounced my foreign name. The white conservative phlebotomist immediately asked me "what's my nationality?" I remained silent. She asked me again, "Are you from here?" "What's your nationality?" She spoke in a way as if I did not understand English. I gave her a stern look and told her to take my bloodwork. Then, a few seconds later I replied, "I am as American as you are". She was speechless. Just look at the callousness of this healthcare provider. She did not even bother to ask me how I am doing and if I need anything. She did not establish any rapport or trust. She straight jumped to my nationality. You should not straight jump to know the nationality a.k.a citizenship of the patient. She was more concerned about my citizenship while I was struggling to breathe. I'm sure she would not have asked what's my nationality in that childish tone if I was a white woman. She would just assume that I belong here and I know English if only I was white enough. You're NOT supposed to ask for nationality in a healthcare setting. There are many undocumented immigrants without insurance and they need care. Very unprofessional. Physician Assistant Erin Baxter Caldwell was also inconsiderate. She sent me home WITHOUT teaching me proper breathing techniques. Erin wrongly advised me to take cough suppressant which worsen by covid -19 symptoms. Erin did NOT advice me to take over the counter de-congestant. I messaged Erin several times to ask for breathing techniques, de-congestant and she ignored my last email. Erin told me to Google videos on breathing techniques via wakehealth portal message. Erin also refused to write an extension for me. Pts do not magically become normal after the 2 week period. Fortunately, my teachers at university were considerate enough to waive all due dates. It took me almost two months to become normal. I still have chest pain & inflammation. Erin was very inconsiderate for NOT giving me an extension of more than 2 weeks even when I told her I needed it. I also had to message Erin back & forth several times & argue with her to send my X-ray and EKG results to me. Erin kept on saying that I don't need to see my own result because everything is normal. Patients still have a right to see their results & keep hard copies of their result. WakeHealth portal did NOT post my EKG and lung X-ray results immediately. I had to demand that they post it. This is unacceptable. I should have to argue with my PA for basic standard of care while I am struggling with SOB & chest pain. There were NO covid-19 testing kits at Wake Forest. Wake Forest makes so much money. There should be widely available covid-19 test even in outpatient setting. Patients cannot claim any benefits for covid-19 and missed days from work and school due to lack of testing kits. Please do BETTER!"
