Reviews of Horton Grove Nature Preserve
"I run all the TLC preserves, the MST and FLT along the Eno and Falls Lake, Umstead, Little River, Ellerbee and the ATT: Horton Grove is my favorite for a short 6 or 7 mile run. The trails are well groomed, no rocky or rooty sections, well shaded and wonderfully scenic in all seasons. Never crowded and often virtually empty on week days. Run the outer perimeter counter clockwise from the Great Barn, adding the Sowell Trail out around the pond. Always delightful."
"Great walking/hiking area. Beautiful, well maintained trails; plenty of markers and maps. I used “AllTrails” to monitor every step; I walked with my grandson and we had a great time!"
"Nice easy trails that are well marked. One caution. Twice I've stood near the trail sign at the north end parking lot and inadvertently found myself standing on a nest of fire ants. Not fun."
"Love this place. In a small area several different ecosystems, ie, separate hard wood and pine groves. Many types of flowers. Dwarf irises in early April."
"Come for the history, stay for the hiking. The historic site is very well preserved and maintained, access to the park is free but limited without being part of the tour. If you want to see inside the structures you’ll have to go with a guide. Signage is a bit dilapidated so brush up on history beforehand. Parking is plentiful and this place has never been crowded while I’ve been there. Dogs are welcome. Very easy hiking so a good place if you want to bring kiddos. Lots of ticks so check yourself afterwards. Hiking is fairly extensive and well maintained for what it is."
