About the Secret Falls Trail Head
The Secret Falls Trail Head is a hidden gem located on Big Creek Road in Highlands, North Carolina. This park and tourist attraction offers visitors the chance to experience the beauty of the 50ft Secret Falls, nestled deep within the Nantahala National Forest. The trail to the falls is relatively easy, only a 1/2 mile one-way hike, making it accessible to all levels of hikers.
To reach the trailhead, visitors can drive on the unpaved forest road FR4567 or Big Creek Road, just a short distance from downtown Highlands. The trail is well-marked with blue blazes and leads hikers through a scenic route with easy creek crossings. At the base of the falls, visitors will be rewarded with a stunning view of the cascading water into a beautiful pool, perfect for wading or cooling off in the summer months.
While the trail is rated as moderate in difficulty, some hikers may find certain sections challenging due to washed-out steps and slippery mud. It is important for visitors to be prepared for the terrain and exercise caution while hiking to the falls. Despite the moderate difficulty, the beauty of Secret Falls makes it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
Reviews of Secret Falls Trail Head
"Definitely not so secret, but well worth the visit. GPS will lead you to the correct location which is near the end of an unpaved winding and narrow road. There are areas where only one vehicle can pass at a time. When you reach the trailhead you will see a bar marking the path. There is room for three cars to park directly in front of this. Other cars will need to park along the gravel road. No restrooms or garbage cans. Phone signal was weak. This is a relatively easy out-and-back but there are a few steep areas and of course the stairs at the very end (which are not too bad even for less fit folks). There were many dogs on this trail and it seemed pet friendly with no where to get lost or fall down the side. The waterfall is beautiful and has several viewing areas. One allows you to get right next to the falls and this would be a great swimming place on a hot day."
"Towards the end of this no-outlet road (Big Creek Road) you will find a small parking area at the trailhead for Secret Falls. See photo with a view of the parking area. Road was rutted in spots to get there so recommend a higher clearance vehicle. Off to the right is a path and a metal gate that you can walk around. Trail is well marked, and not too difficult. The stairs have been completed at the bottom of the trail by the falls, which is fantastic! The falls are very nice. They are almost chute-like as they fall into a swimming hole area. I was there on an early September Saturday morning when no one else was around, so it was quiet and the sun was coming up right over the falls which made for some nice photos."
"One of our favorite hikes so far because you get to interact with the falls on this one. The bottom pool is great for swimming and the views from the top are great also. The trail to the top was partially blocked for some reason but still easy to get to."
"Tucked away easy hike to a beautiful waterfall. There is not much foot traffic and the stairs they are implementing will make it easier for the less abled to make their way down to take in the wondrous view. We took our two huskies and the trail was not difficult to navigate at all. With the abundance of rocks and logs as well as shoreline to sit on at the bottom, you will not want to leave. Pro tip: make sure you have 4 wheel drive as the route down to the trailhead is winding and rocky."
"Not much of a secret! I thought I would have the place to myself, but I didn't. There is not that much parking and it probably get crowded during the summer months. But if you go in the winter you have a better chance of seeing this beautiful waterfall. The trail is easy till the end. Then it gets slippery and steep. They are putting in stairs but it won't be done anytime soon."
