Reviews of High Falls North Trailhead
"Well maintained trail to 2 beautiful waterfalls! Much more gradual slope than the other approach to High Falls. Family & dog friendly."
"Nice trail with quite a few nice places worth stopping, pools for swimming, and waterfalls. Not a particularly difficult hike but can be quite muddy."
"PLEASE read this for CLEAR DIRECTIONS to the trail. It's not nearly as difficult to find as some reviews have said with these directions. Take 107 to Shl Crk Mountain Rd. If coming from the north, you will take a slight right onto it, or if coming from the south, you will take a sharp left onto it. You will see an orange gate. Park on the side of Shl Crk Mountain Rd. near the gate (turn around and park on the gate side of the road for easy exit). Walk THROUGH/AROUND the gate by taking the small cleared path to the left of the gate if facing it, and walk down that gravel drive/pathway, which shows up as Swinging Vine Trl on Google maps. You will see a barely readable Notice sign posted on a tree there. Walk down the gravel drive a short ways to a wooden bridge that you will cross to get over Shoal Creek. Just a little bit ahead, you will see a path through the woods straight ahead. It's not marked as a trail, but it is very clear and very obviously the trailhead. DO NOT go down the right fork gravel drive next to the trailhead; it's a driveway for a private residence. Please see my pics for some of these landmarks. Once on the trail, it is very clear where to go as it's a well kept trail. The beginning is all gravel, but it is extremely muddy after rainfall later on, so wear waterproof shoes. It's a little up and down, but nowhere near as steep as the south trailhead. Once on the trail, it basically tracks the West Fork Tuckasegee River all the way to the falls. Hatcher Falls sneaks up on you on the right about 1.8 miles in, and it's well worth stopping to check out. You can cross the creek over boulders to get a closer look. You will need to climb over a large patch of boulders to get to High Falls, but it's not difficult at all. I'd recommend bringing a sturdy walking stick to help, and leave yourself plenty of time to check out both falls and the river along the way. Great, fairly easy trail to a gorgeous destination!"
"For this trail you’ll see a red gate that’s where the trail head begins. So you can just park on the gravel road off to the side. The hike to the falls is maybe 2 miles. There’s a lot of swimming holes along the way but you definitely want to make it to the top!"
"I've done the south trail last year and thought I'm going to die.lol The North trail is 4 miles around trip and moderate. I enjoyed it much better. There was some challenges as a previous hikers mentioned . A few fallen trees, muddy areas that made it slippery , lots of mosquitos. I was prepared. The first waterfall is nice about 1.80 miles. After that the trail gets more difficult with lots of rocks and narrow path. Keep going till you hear and see massive waterfalls with some huge boulders and water pool. Butterflies everywhere made it more magical. I can't wait to go back again."
