"I called for a consultation on 12/14/2020 at 8:43 am. The person I spoke with told me the earliest I could have a consult was 12/23/2020. I had a scenario where time could've been of the essence and expressed this to her (not in those exact words but I referenced the deadline). I asked if I could call back after consulting an involved party since I've never been in this situation. She seemed fine with it and was pleasant enough. I called back at 11:16 (right after I received the response from the involved party) on the same day and spoke to a different individual. This individual put me on hold to consult with the person I had spoken with that morning. Apparently they decided that I'd now need to pay a $250 fee to have a consultation on 12/30/2020! When I referenced the lack of a fee being mentioned on my initial inquiry and the earlier date, she simply said "No, its 12/30 and the fee of $250 must be paid before the call." Luckily, another attorneys office (who isn't taking new clients until the beginning of the year) was compassionate enough to tell me about the SC Bar website & I've been referred to what (so far) seems to be a much better practice. The moral of the story is: Your front line makes the difference. You could be the best attorney in the world but I'll never know because I never made it beyond the receptionists."
