Reviews of Arts of the Samurai
"Thank God for Arts of the Samurai and its fantastic instructors (most of whom are world-renowned in the martial arts communities, by the way). My daughter has Asperger's Syndrome and was in need of a way to control her body and impulses and learn how her actions affect others. A friend suggested Arts of the Samurai and I have found the instructors to be top-notch. My daughter has benefitted in so many ways that I can't even list them all. Her self-control and confidence have skyrocketed since joining this karate program. The instructors are ALWAYS inclusive of her and they have taught the class to accept my child in a way that other institutions have not. However, this school is the real deal. It is by no means a place where everyone gets an award for just showing up. The students are taught a wealth of concepts and self-defense forms and yes, even how to attack when necessary. These folks work hard for the belts they receive, my daughter included. Not only do the students work hard, physically, for their belts but they also learn the proper concepts of karate. The owner of Arts of the Samurai, Toni McSorley, is very involved with each class and knows every single student by name. Oh, and by the way, she is also a Grand Master of karate (highest rank you can receive, I believe) who has learned from one of the best and passes down her knowledge to each and every one of her students. All of the instructors have been fantastic, in our experience - they are trained very well and they seem to be an extension of the owner herself, which means no conflicting philosophies or practices. The whole Arts of the Samurai dojo (instructors, students, families of students) has become like a second family to both my daughter and myself. Give them a try, you WON'T be disappointed."
"Absolutely amazing place for anyone (age, sex, physical condition). I started taking my son when he was in second grade to help boost his confidence and teach him self-discipline. Unlike some martial arts schools that only focus on the physical training, AOS provides a whole-self philosophy much more in keeping with traditional martial arts. Leave your politics and religion at the door - all are accepted. They are also excellent about not promoting based on tuition checks, or pushing anyone beyond their capabilities. "Do your personal best." My son has learned to earn his promotions. The lessons taught here extend to every aspect of our lives. The Arts of the Samurai instructors and students have since become an extended family for us. 5 years and we won't be leaving any time soon! If you just want to buy your child a black belt, check Amazon. If you want to learn emotional balance and self-awareness while becoming physically fit and able to self-defend then check out Arts of the Samurai."
"I am one of the instructors at this Dojo, I have been with this System since 2001. I'm at present the second highest ranking person teaching at this site. I have been studying the different martial arts since 1970. As a child I learned some Indian Martial Arts from relatives that were American Indian. I served in the US Army from 1973 to 1995 with a 6 year break in between. I served as a body guard to Military leaders and VIP's during my service. I served during Vietnam, Desert Storm and Desert Shield. I trained a lot of the National Guards that went to fight in Kuwait. I trained to go to the 1980's Olympics but a knee injury prevented me from being accepted (ended up with a ACL reconstruction. I have competed in Germany, Greece, Mexico and across the Middle and Eastern US. I am a 4 time inductee to the US National Martial Arts Alliance Hall of Fame, have 12 World Gold Medals, I'm a 9 time US National Champion With the US National Martial Arts Alliance Competition Team, 6 time Regional Champion. I am a World Champion, a National Champion, a Regional Champion with the USNMAA, and with NAFMA. I hold A Black Belt Rank in several Martial Art Systems one 7th dan, one 5th dan one 3rd dan, two 2nd dans, and four 1st dans. Yes I may have blood on my hands but it is all legal blood and earned the hard way. The Arts of the Samurai is a Child and Woman safe environment. The School also teaches martial arts to special needs children and adults for self defense. the School offers training to Abused Women and Children as well. We are a Multi style Dojo that combines the techniques but is grounded in Shotokan Traditions, Toyama Ryu Sword Arts and ShinKendo. I've been a student of GM Toni McSorley, GM Richard Chun, GM Danny Pond, GM Vistacation, Master Richard Roundtree, Master Charles Heck, Master Dante, and a few dozen master with in the US Army. I believe Arts of the Samurai is one of the top best Dojo in Knoxville Tennessee. The instructors may be old but they are no push over. PS. my Chihuahua can pull down a badminton set ... think about it Murphy"
"If someone is interested in learning what martial arts is all about, then Arts of the Samurai is the place for you. Students are taught self respect and respect for others. Several styles are taught for both children and adults. There are many fine Martial Art schools in the area, but Arts of the Samurai has a focus on family."
