"I think the career center is a good place to start if you’re in a bind or have no idea where to start your job/internship search. HOWEVER, I don’t really understand students working in the career center giving career advice. Specifically students who have no work experience and are also looking for jobs. I came in for a drop-in session expecting to brush up my resume. I was seated with another senior, and while he gave me 1 good piece of advice, he essentially spent 30-45 minutes staring at my resume in complete confusion. He then proceeded to use his resume as an example, which was full of projects because he had no work/internship experience. It was hard to read, even with my strong prescription glasses, and unnecessarily long for someone with no experience. I don’t say this to critique him, but it was something you’d expect to see from someone with 15 years of experience, not 1 or 2. After that he asked me if I was looking for jobs or an internship, as if this would have changed the trajectory of the conversation, but when I told him I was looking for a job he became more confused. He then said he had only been on the search for internships, which explained the length of the project section. So here I am, a now graduate with 6 years of work experience, trying to optimistically take advice from someone that got their first real job a year or 2 ago. This isn’t an issue until you consider how much the job market and job search has changed. It’s important to have people working in the career center who understand what recruiters want and what strategies are proven to be effective in the post-COVID job market. I don’t know how someone who graduated on the same day as me would have sufficient knowledge and advice on how to land a corporate job, especially when they themselves aren’t looking for one. Between the confusion and his advice for me to copy & paste job duties for similar jobs (which is not typically recommended), I would say that you’re better off scheduling with an actual coach at the center or just going somewhere else. The career center does have potential, and I will being going back, but not for a drop-in."
