Reviews of Harris & Smith OB-GYN at Patterson Place
"I’m just very disappointed with the aftercare of this facility. The communication in this office is terrible. I have never waited this long for test results at any other ob-gyn office. Dr. Montoya won’t answer any of my questions on Duke MyChart after the visit while being in excruciating pain and having a rare condition I’ve never had before. Go somewhere else where they care about your healing, recovery, and mental health. All of your questions should be answered and you should feel at ease after visiting with a doctor."
"Please don't go here if you value your health and fertility. I had a positive pregnancy test associated with some heavy bleeding. At 5 weeks pregnant, I called the appointment line and an unsympathetic scheduler told me I could have an appointment when I was 11 weeks pregnant. I was insistent that I needed an earlier appointment due to my symptoms. However, rather than transferring me to a triage nurse to discuss my issues, she scheduled me the 11 week appointment and told me to go to the ER if I wanted to be seen sooner. My bleeding and pain had resolved and I felt fine at this point (no emergent symptoms) so I didn't think an ER visit was necessary, but I knew the bleeding could be due to a number of causes. So I still wanted to be seen in a timely, routine manner. Frustrated, I called the nurse non-emergent triage line. No one answered. I left a voicemail to the line, which stated my call would be returned promptly. No one ever called me back to discuss my symptoms. With my bleeding and pain resolved, I assumed I'd had an early miscarriage and moved on with my life and figured I would go to my appointment in another 5 weeks. Unfortunately, before my appointment, I suffered a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. I lost a fallopian tube and almost died, requiring multiple blood transfusions. Had anyone given me an earlier appointment that I requested or simply returned my call from the triage line, this could have been treated very simply with medication. Now, I'm not sure if I will be able to conceive again, and I suffered the emotional and physical trauma of the rupture. I contacted Duke about my concerns and received a very condescending letter back stating that the standard of care was met, and they had no evidence of me leaving a voicemail and no nurse had documented the call. I'm a 35 year old woman; I know how to leave a voicemail, and I did not hallucinate doing so. I assume some overworked, busy employee deleted the voicemail (whether by accident or negligence) rather than returning it, hence why it was never documented. As a healthcare provider myself, the care I received (and Duke's response to an experience that literally almost killed me) was embarrassing and shameful. Again, please do not go here if you have the option."
"Three stars only because Dr. Shenkman has always been wonderful. She listens to me and explains things very well. Have been going to her for at least four years. The staff is always friendly, check-in is easy, etc. Sad to say that I will no longer be a patient here though given the lack of responsibility with my health and the lack of communication. I came in for a birth control replacement March 1st. I was told it needed to be ordered and got a pap-smear so that I didn’t waste my $40 co-pay. Kind of frustrating but I understand. It has now been almost two months and I have called multiple times and have yet to get an update. All anyone ever tells me is that “she ordered it.” That’s not a good enough update for me. When will it be in? Do I have to wait another two months for it? This is very frustrating and highly irresponsible. I’ve called maybe 3 or 4 times since then and still nothing. I’ve left voicemails and haven’t heard anything back. Very disappointed that these people are in charge of other people’s health. I honestly wouldn’t suggest this location to any woman thinking about going here."
"Never had a bad experience here. No long waits at my appointments, everyone was friendly! Dr. Sullivan is the BEST! She along with Dr. Avery performed my c-section and tube removal. My healing process was flawless. The nurses at Duke were great! Alexandra was very helpful and took care of everything regarding me and the baby. No complaints 10/10."
"For a pregancy, they were great. I got all the care and options. Things were explained and helped me via the nurse triage line several times when there were concerns. You do meet various doctors but I liked most of them and the nurses. Some of them acted like my husband didn't exist while others treated him as part of the process. But for Covid they were one of the few places that let my husband in for appointments, which was very important to me. They let us know what tests available and risks. They have a strict 41 week rule which I hated since most healthy first time moms take longer than 41 weeks so I had to be induced. I've been to both of their offices. This location is more spacious and felt nicer environment Now your probably wondering why 3 then. Delivery was so so but wouldn't put that fully on them. It was my postpartum checkups and experience that makes me rate lower. They had me come in a week after birth to only check my blood pressure and ask a few questions. This may be standard but felt very inadequate. Plus in my case I needed a blood test because my liver enzymes were high and was told by hospital I couldn't take Tylenol till they were better. I had to remind them and get it confirm by doctor to get it done. Next their assessments didn't detect my postpartum anxiety which I had probably since month 1. They didn't double check the stitches and see how I was recovering because I didn't have any complaints. Their help with postpartum mood disorders felt very lacking to none existent. I went in knowing there was something horrible wrong in September and talk with OBGYN, no tests were performed though filled out the little are you feeling this and purposely answered it more severely than usual. She gave me a prescription and a print out of resources all of which were booked for at least a month and a few no longer existed. I mentioned trouble with pain for my vagina and she found me scar tissue very tense. They did get me a referral but it was to wrong place first so it took longer. But she did a good check and assessment on that, but not good notes passed over to the Physical Therapist. Overall with being now 8 months postpartum with another visit late November where I was referred to somewhere else that doesn't have openings till Feb and more or less stated can't help me at OBGYN. I would say Postpartum been horrible and they would not be my choice to go to for such and would consider elsewhere for a better postpartum help. And I plan to find a new OBGYN practice to work with on all things due to this experience. Keep in mind this review is by someone who is still suffering from postpartum mood disorder and needing better help."
