Reviews of Douglas – Durham, NC Veritas Collaborative Eating Disorder Treatment Center
"Coming from a P.H.P. program that simply accepted A.R.F.I.D. patients to a program like Veritas that specialized in A.R.F.I.D. was a night and day difference! The work I was able to do there laid the foundation for a lifetime of recovery. More than simply putting on weight I was helped to challenge my fear of certain types of food, expand my pallet, and have a more nuanced understanding of both nutrition science and how my body utilizes the foods I eat. For those who have the means, Veritas is a no-brainer."
"I’m not sure how to explain my experience at Veritas. My team was top notch / elite. My dissatisfaction lies around everything else. It’s freezing cold 24/7, the food is made an hour or 2 before so it’s cold, stale, hard etc by the time you get it. Want to warm up your biscuit that’s been sitting out for an hour? Too bad the answer is no. The common room is a mess, majority of the staff you spend 95% of the day with don’t have any knowledge or experience with eating disorders - all of their responses and comments come from a script, when in group by the time you get a list of everyone’s triggers there is nothing left to say that won’t bother someone so it’s a waste of time, a community meeting is held once a week with one member of upper management who comes across so corporate America it’s painful… I’ll stop there. My medical provider took EXCELLENT care of me along with majority of the nursing staff. My therapist, RD and Psychiatrist always made me feel heard, understood and validated. If I needed something one of them always made themselves available. There is one TA that played a vital role in my treatment/recovery. I will never forget them. If I got something out of my time at Veritas other than medical stability and a few coping skills - it was hope to become recovered and to help others such as they helped me."
"So I read all of the reviews, both good and bad. I can say that I see both side of the coin. For myself, I had a mostly positive experience. The therapists that were assigned to me (Lily & Marva) were fantastic. I love doing DBT and group work with them. I found it really beneficial. Now I won’t say that my experience with the dietician was negative. I’ll say it was more-or-less not necessary. I’m currently at a healthy weight and didn’t really need help with eating so it was frustrating when I was out on a diet that required me to eat way more than I’m used to. If I was significantly underweight then I would agree that eating more is necessary. But being the correct weight and being told to eat more was simply not helpful. My take-away from my (short) experience is that if you’re struggling with eating and gaining weight, this would be the program for you. They care and want to see you succeed. If you’re looking for just the mental health aspect, I don’t believe you would be best served here but maybe give it a shot of a week and see how you feel. That was my experience."
"I have been fighting this illness for many years now and have never had the privilege of a team of clinicians that was as smart, dedicated, and appropriately compassionate as Mem, Elysse and Joe. They gave me the tools to fight the illness, fought alongside me, and believed in me long after I had given up on myself. They reminded / showed me that there is an alternative to this disease. That I have the option each day to choose life. And that I am capable of creating one that is worth living. I can say with one-hundred percent certainty that I would not be alive today without these incredible humans."
"To preface this review…this was my first time in treatment so I do not have anything to compare Veritas too. That said, as a whole the treatment center does a really good job at attacking the eating disorder. The registered dietitian team is absolutely amazing, I can imagine that this particular provider would be the most disliked/mistrusted person at an eating disorder treatment center. I was so impressed with the care and compassion of each one I encountered during my treatment. Sophia, Elysse, Abby, Leah and Stacia really do a great job at walking the line between pushing hard against the ED thoughts and being caring and supportive during a really hard process. They were able to provide evidence based information, answered every and all questions and concerns without judgement. So the “food” part I think they hit the mark. Where I think there is room for improvement is the group/therapy aspect. The psychotherapists are great but I think it’s too generalized and not specific for individual patients. There is lots of focus of food, and skills to combat the negative thoughts and feelings that come with an eating disorder but not a lot of conversation about WHY we have those thoughts and feelings. I understand that there is only so much time in a day but I think utilizing some more individual time with therapists might help facilitate figuring that part out which might lead to a more long term recovery. Also, that said, you only get out what you put in! I appreciate my time there and appreciate all the care and support I received."
