"Do not allow your family to become a patient here without ensuring all their medications are ordered and arrive ontime. On my mother's first night in the facility, after experiencing an extreme fracture(in 8 pieces and reconstruction of her femur with rod/plate/10 screws approach), she was forced to go over 14 hrs without her Regular- before injury- pain medication doses. It is absolutely inhumane to force someone who is bed bound to lay and suffer in pain. Then be faced with having to use the restroom, and being made to wait over 20 minutes before someone even acknowledged her, and it was sadly too late and she had an accident. The response was suggesting she wear a diaper. A DIAPER?!? Before my mothers fall she didn't need help or assistance from anyone to use the restroom and handle her daily needs. She has gone to the facility to get assistance in recovery because she cannot be home alone and care for herself. Asking someone who just wants to improve, heal and go home, to regress to wearing diapers is humiliating, and contradicts the idea of rehabilitation, and lends to the idea of regression. I spoke to staff in the middle of the night(Around 2am) about just the pain medication, and was assured it would be there in an hour, or they would wake up a supervisor. By morning, over 5 hours later, it wasn't until day shift arrived she got medication, 14 and a half hours after the ONE dose they had for her. Sitting and typing this now, she is also facing experiencing an additional accident waiting for someone to help her with even getting a bedpan for over 30 minutes, and is calling out to the staff that passes, and having to resort to calling the facilities direct number just to get help and still no one answered, it took her yelling to get attention of someone! The only reason for two stars, is despite all the issues and problems, the staff has been super kind and sweet."
"I have been working for the Laurels of Pender for the past 3 weeks. I travel for my job, so I see a lot of nursing homes. This is a wonderful facility. The staff are so friendly; the residents are smiling as I walk through the halls; and it is clean. The families that visit are smiling as they leave as well. I cannot forget the food! What wonderful meals I had daily. I highly recommend them for employment or placement."
"Wish I never brought my Mom to Laurels. She was doing good at ECU Health Heart Institute then within less than a week at Laurels, seemed to have a stroke and go downhill quickly and they gave up on her stopping meds and food/liquids saying she didn't respond to gag reflex test where studies show over 50% of stroke patients can still swallow even though they failed that test. Their NP acting like a Doctor made bad judgement calls that severely impacted my Mom's condition and also a huge disconnect between orders and nurses which I experienced twice with my Mom. I will be contacting an attorney shortly for negligence and other issues there, but now trying to make my Mom most comfortable I can under Hospice Care thanks to Laurels most likely causing her to have a dehydration stroke. Food was good and good variety and some nurses and CNA's were very good but a few need to be fired and find a real doctor to management patient care, especially those with major medical conditions."
"Do not send your loved ones here. This is absolutely the worst facility I have ever witnessed. The good reviews that they have on the page come from the staff. It is pretty sad when a staff member claims that their family member is in the facility and actually not. The experience that I have seen at this facility is horrific. They do not care about the residents nor the residents family. The staff is extremely lazy and disrespectful to the residents. I can only imagine what goes on when family isn't around. The staff is truly there just for a pay check and does not care about your loved ones. I would highly recommend hiring new staff that actually knows what they are doing or close the facility down completely, before they neglect more patients. This facility has changed names over the years for a reason because they are horrible. been numerous complaints on this facility, and if you have a loved one I highly recommend you not placing them here."
"My Mama was just at the Laurels of Pender for therapy after a knee replacement. The staff was great to her and she loved everybody there. We really appreciate the care and attention that she received. I would give more stars if there were more to give!"
