Reviews of Academy of Barber Training
"Mrs.Jones is a great instructor. She truly loves what she does and wants her student to learn all that they can to be successful professionals. I would tell anyone to check out New Trends Barber Academy whether for a hair do or to start on a career of your own."
"THE FOLLOWING IS TRUE AND MY TRUE EXPERIENCES AT THE ACADEMY OF BARBER TRAINING OF EASLEY, SC. I am a former student of The Academy of Barber Training and I attended from April 3rd, 2018 to June 20th, 2018. I have since transferred to a different barber school. When I toured the school before enrolling, a star senior student said to me while in the classroom without Mrs. O'Bryant noticing, "Don't do it. Go somewhere else." I wasn't paying attention because I was so excited and everything seemed so put together and nice and neat. The school is set up to a T, is very clean, it looks very professional, and that drew me there. At the time that I went there, the tuition was only $375 a month. Cheapest price that I could find. But since then, I have realized that you get what you pay for. The students that I was there with were great and they taught me so much. We were like family. On my first or second day there, the students told me the truth about the school and let me in on some of their experiences. I asked one student when we were going to learn how to fade and he told me that my best bet was to just get the required hours, keep my head low, and watch YouTube videos on how to fade because Mrs. O'Bryant doesn't teach that. On May 10th, 2018, Mrs. O'Bryant requested the help of a student to perform air conditioning maintenance by replacing filters. Instead of hiring a professional with a ladder, Mrs. O'Bryant had the student stand on top of a stool, which was on top of two metal chairs, which was on top of two plastic tables placed next to each other. Observing this caused me to call her judgement as an instructor into question. The fact that she was willing to put a students safety at risk was a serious concern for me. On May 21st, in classroom time, Mrs. O'Bryant told the class that we were not going to be taught mens haircutting and styling. She went on to say that if we wanted to learn those aspects that we as students needed to bring in clients for her and then she would teach us. It was after that day that I began my search for a different school. On May 30th, 2018, my very first client came in for a haircut. The haircut was taken from me and Mrs. O'Bryant completed it. Later in the day, Mrs. O'Bryant explained to me in front of the class in a demeaning tone that she intervened and took over the haircut because I was, "asking her too many questions in front of the client." I became afraid to ask questions in fear of having services taken away from me and in fear of being humiliated in front of the class again. On multiple occasions, I was punished for asking questions. Mrs. O'Bryant believes that you aren't a "real barber" if you fade with clippers and guards. If you're looking to learn that, this isn't the place for you. If you're wanting to learn how to do mens hair, this isn't the place for you either. You will roll a lot of perms, do a lot of foils, and a lot of women's hairstyling. After attending school there, I seriously wondered if being a barber was something I wanted to do as I would leave school at the end of the day filled with more anxiety and depression that I had came in with. Plus, the backhanded comments from Mrs. O'Bryant didn't help things either. But, I found a school that filled me with hope and excitement, was assured that I would learn mens haircutting and styling, and assured that it was okay for me to ask questions. In closing, let me say to you what that star senior student said to me. Don't do it. Go somewhere else. One of the last things that Mrs. O'Bryant said to me before leaving her school was, "Have a nice life!" After leaving the school, I am indeed having a nice life. (These are only my experiences and yours may be different) Be blessed."
"First off, let me start by saying this, I am a student at this school. I drive 67 miles, one way, to attend. When researching schools I looked for several things, the first being cost because that was an important factor for me as I do not qualify for financial aid. Once I narrowed down my choices I went to visit someone who is on the SC barber board, they told me that this school had an excellent pass record and that I would receive a quality education attending. After visiting the school and seeing the variety of students enrolled I decided to attend. During my time here I have met some wonderful clients who have allowed me the pleasure of taking care of their grooming needs. I have confidence in my technical skills and infection control procedures, I also feel confident in my studies as well as my ability to pass the state board examination. I am saying all of that to say this, some of these reviews left on here are blatant lies told by a disgruntled person. I refuse to stand for it any longer and have the good standing of my school and myself as a student marred by false reviews. The two "customers" who left poor reviews are not in our client record book at all, we keep detailed records of everyone so I would know and the "Jay" who supposedly owns a barber shop in the area where students came for jobs is ALSO a lie. I have been enrolled since February, each student who has graduated has had a barber shop to go into since well before their completion date. They have no reason to look for a job, they have chairs waiting on them when they finish their hours. As a student who is enrolled in this program, I know what is happening here and who is behind this smear campaign. It is petty and childish to say the least. Please feel free to come in during the hours of 10-3 and ask for Jennie and I will be glad to show you that I do not have any problems demonstrating and performing the "basics" of any haircut, color or shave service you may desire. Again, please do not read into these negative reviews, come in and see for yourself that this is a positive learning/teaching environment. Thank you."
"Awesome School!!! I received an excellent haircut from one of the students. The instructor was very nice and the students enjoyed learning. Miss Genia made the student feel at ease and seemed very nice and professional. I think this is an excellent place to gain an exciting career in barbering and I will return for more services."
"I went in to get a simple buzz cut. Overall, seemed like a clean barber school. Only thing, I really hate it for the students here. I watched the instructor, Gena, completely degrade a student while I was there. The guy that was cutting my hair said that it happens a lot. It's a school. Students are there to learn. Thought this was very unprofessional of someone in her position."
