"whether you’re parent or a student, you’re just a dollar sign to them. they do not care about your child’s wellbeing. The staff will not think twice about isolating your child from others. Speaking of the staff, the people your kids are spending the vast majority of their time with are NOT professionals. That’s right, you’re spending $50,000 to have your kid mistreated by a bunch of 20-somethings who don’t know what they’re even doing. a prime example of this would be when we encountered a bear near the tarps we slept under. Staff did not evacuate us from the area, instead we were all kept about 100-200 yards away from where the bear was spotted. any time a kid there (besides the suck-up; of course) tried to get any information about what we were going to do about this situation we were ignored. that is until some random old man working for them named “Goose” comes and yells at us for complaining too much. And that’s just one instance of the insane lack of respect your child will be given here. If you care about your child at all do NOT send them to blue ridge therapeutic wilderness."
"After reflecting on my stay at BRTW for 2 weeks now, I cannot describe how transformative and great this experience is. I stayed for about 90 days (3 months) at BRTW; at first, I was not very happy about staying for that long. I came in very scared and anxious about what could happen and about the people around me. My first night was spent in G1-3, then the day after I got split into G8, which is the group I was in for the rest of my stay. I met quite a few people who I would consider my friend. Though not all of the students were Enthusiastic about the work that had to be done in the group, we still got along for the most part, and the work got done, whether it be by someone else, or just waiting for the other person to do it. I came into BR as a person who lacked self-worth, who lacked structure, basically everything was chaos for me, and who was ready to give up on life. But throughout my stay, things progressively got better People told me how great I was doing from when they first met me. And now, today, I can see the improvement. I'm more motivated to do the things that I want to do, I have more structure in my life, I'm going outdoors more, just to enjoy nature, and most importantly, there has been a lot more open family communication. And I can't place all of the growth I made on myself (I did most of it), but also staff helped me improve. They taught me what structure was/looked like, and how to set boundaries with myself. They also taught me genuine introspection, and invaluable life skills. They were there for me when I was down, they were there for me when I was very heated, they were always there to talk to me, and it always helped whenever I did talk with a staff. One staff in particular has made a very profound influence on me, and I really liked their character/personality, and I wish to shine with that same essence. (Thank you, beautiful bean :) ) The program fostered an environment of safety. We were able to have very deep and meaningful conversations, (we'd call these philosophy talks), and were able to be vulnerable. We were able to open up about our feelings and it created such a nice and peaceful environment to be in. I'd say the hardest part about this program is definitely the hikes, the most we hiked in 1 day was 8 miles, to what we called "raven" (a mountain,) it was a long hike, and I wasn't having the best day, when I was considering just turning around and making the rest of the group follow me. But eventually I sat and talked to staff and peers. And although I wasn't feeling that much better, I decided to do it for the group, and in the end, it paid off for me as well. And I felt a lot better after finishing the hike. And, the therapist, Justin Messinger, was the best therapist I could ask for, I wish he were my therapist back at home. He did so much to help me, but most importantly, he gave quotes weekly when he came to visit us. Which was my favorite part of the week. Overall, BRTW was 100% worth going to, and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. The unwavering support, deep involvement, and enriching adventure that is this program, has affected me a lot, and I feel that I am a better person than who I used to be. This program, after I had completed it, instilled a sense of pride in me, just knowing that I am capable of doing hard things. If you are a parent thinking about sending your child to this program, I 100% agree with that decision, as long as you are open to talking about this program with your child, and making sure that they are open to accepting it. With all that, I leave you with a quote: We travel because we need to. Because distance and difference are the secret tonic to creativity. When we get home, home is still the same, but something inside of us is different. And that difference changes everything. (P.S. If the owner so happens to read this, could you please get somebody to tell Justin, Lavender, James (the field staff, not field director, well maybe the field director too...), and Tyler that I hope they're having a great day!) Thanks for reading :>"
"BlueRidge changed my daughter for the best! Kathy was amazing, her crew taught my daughter life changing skills and provided her safety, security, well balanced meals and an oppourtunity to soar. My daughter had such a postive change she can not wait to return to help others in this journey. BlueRidge gave my daughter the skills to thrive! The overall family support was beyond amazing and incredible experience!"
"Hit hurts to see students leave bad reviews or BRWT. It simply isn’t for some kids but many can thrive from it. I was in G1 of BRWT in March- June of 2022. It saved my life and am beyond grateful for my experience here. Your kids will be safe here I can assure you and will have amazing mental health treatment with whatever they are struggling with. More people need this in their lives, the adjustment is hard but will come. I learned in blue ridge my love for writing and will soon be going to college and studying writing (hopefully at Appalachian state university in the blue ridge mountains) which I had not of known if I never went. I love you blue ridge, thank you all who were field staff and working behind the scenes for all of the lost children who attended."
"Our son spent 9 weeks at Blue Ridge and we were very happy with the staff and whole family approach to therapy. We had a family therapist that we had calls with every week and also talked to our sons therapist every week. The parents workshop was great and has really helped us gain tools to communicate better with our son now that he is home. We would highly recommend Blue Ridge Wilderness."
