Reviews of The Outdoor Academy
"The Outdoor Academy is an experience like no other. It gives teens a chance to be away from their phones and most importantly find themselves. The faculty at OA truly care about each students wellbeing and success, they are there because that want to inspire you to learn. If you or your child is considering applying to OA my advice is there is no harm in applying, you wont regret it."
"I highly recommend the Outdoor Academy to anyone considering it. I have never had a more positive and engaging experience with education and community. You will meet some of your closest friends there and make unforgettable memories. I will never forget eating Twinkies on top of cold mountain looking back into the distance at where we started that morning. Trust me, it’s worth it!"
"There is no other place in the world like The Outdoor Academy. It is a truly unique experience that a few lucky people get to have every year. The combination of outdoor programming, small classrooms, and a very intentional community are one of a kind. During my semester, I learned more about myself than I ever could have in a traditional school environment. It was a genuinely transformational time in my life. The staff at OA are some of the most incredible people I’ve ever met in my life. You truly become family in a very short period of time. The ability to get so close with your teachers and residents taught me so much about interpersonal connections, and how to build genuine bonds. They truly care about every individual student and their well-being. Learning how to backpack, rock climb, and whitewater canoe was its own adventure. I came in with little to no experience, and by the end of the semester I felt comfortable doing all three on my own. I also got to see some of the most beautiful nature that the east coast has to offer. Where else would you get the chance to spend 5 nights hiking along the Appalachian Trail or paddling on the French Broad. To anyone that is hesitant about going, I was too. It’s definitely worth taking the leap. If you’re worried about missing a sports season or a school play, don’t. OA is one of those things that will stick with you for the rest of your life. It will teach you lessons and skills that you may only get this one chance to learn. It’s so worth it."
"I've been fortunate to have had both of my sons attend OA. There were so many amazing aspects of their semesters, including living in a cabin with other boys their age (plus a resident) and having to keep it warm by firewood, learning how to make fires, hike, paddle in white water, rock climb, how to really discuss and debate with their peers and their teachers, how to make knives, clean a kitchen, do their own laundry, be a part of a community and learn that their actions can impact the whole ... and LIVE WITHOUT THEIR PHONES FOR 4 MONTHS! :-) They learned to make friends the old-fashioned way ... by looking people in the eyes and talking! If only every teenager in America had this opportunity ..."
"I am a past parent of an Outdoor Academy (OA) alumna and, because of her and our experience with OA, I am a Board Member. The phrase is often over-used, but in this case completely true - OA was life changing for our daughter and for us. The confidence gained, the leadership and wilderness skills learned, the ability to learn and not just memorize, all of these and more were ways in which OA and the remarkable faculty there changed and challenged our daughter. There aren't enough ways or words available to recommend OA to every student and parent. It is a time and an experience that you will never forget or regret, and you will be touched, changed, and grateful for the rest of your life. I promise!"
