About the Blue Ridge School of Herbal Medicine
The Blue Ridge School of Herbal Medicine, located in Asheville, North Carolina, is a renowned institution offering a unique and hands-on approach to herbal education. Founded in 1999, the school has a strong focus on creating a sense of community within the classroom, allowing students to directly connect with experienced teachers and fellow classmates.
Led by core teachers with years of clinical experience and a deep knowledge of wild plants, the school offers a sensory approach to the basics of Chinese medicine while still maintaining a Western Herbalism focus. Students have the opportunity to learn through plant walks, hands-on medicine making classes, and internships that provide a deep dive into seasonal herbalism.
The school's mission is to help students connect with nature, the collective, and themselves through an awareness of body and ecology, promoting healing in the world. With a focus on identifying, harvesting, and using local plants, students learn how to work with Earth's natural medicine to harmonize imbalances and improve health.
In addition to its educational programs, the Blue Ridge School of Herbal Medicine also offers fresh, ethically wildcrafted herbal tinctures through Pine's Herbals. The school is affiliated with organizations such as the American Herbalists Guild, NC Herb Association, United Plant Savers, Botanical Gardens of Asheville, and Rainforest Action Network.
Located on a beautiful property in Barnardsville, just 20 minutes north of Asheville, the Blue Ridge School of Herbal Medicine provides a rich and immersive learning experience for anyone interested in alternative medicine and herbalism.

Reviews of Blue Ridge School of Herbal Medicine
"CoreyPine and Jamie Sparks are incredible teachers, not only did they teach us the medicinal properties, practices & applications of plants they also introduced us to the spirit and personality of them and how to connect more deeply with them, truly a very holistic approach:). I really appreciated my time with this school and would highly recommend the introductory class to anyone looking into this path. You will never forget it! Thanks for all the beautiful lectures and plant walks."
"I was a part of CoreyPine Shane’s Holistic Herbalism program in 2015. I looked at a few different programs around the country and settled on this one in big part because of CoreyPine’s grounded balance between science, herbal tradition and honoring deeper aspects of tuning into plant nature subjectively. He keeps a good community around him and brings in lovely, knowledgeable guest teachers. I also appreciated the balance between plant walks and classroom time. It’s a well-rounded program that helped me create a strong foundation and relationship with a good number of plants and expanded my understanding of A&P. The field trips were also really rich with experience and I formed memories and friendships I’ll never forget! Asheville was also a great place to study herbs as an east-coaster, as it is very bio-diverse and there’s a large community of plant lovers there, in a variety of vocations. I learned quite a bit just by being immersed in a good community of nature-respecting individuals."
"Going to Blue Ridge for herbal school was one of the best decisions I’ve made. From CoreyPine’s wealth of knowledge and all the other fantastic teachers we had, to the camping trips that I still have the best memories of, it was an incredible experience. I may not practice herbalism for anyone but myself, but it was well worth the time and effort put in for the way it informs my life now."
"Fantastic school for starting or continuing your studies in herbal medicine. CoreyPine’s courses are culturally well-rounded with several different teachers to offer perspectives of a variety of herbal traditions. I graduated with a certificate from the Holistic Herbalism program 8 years ago, and the knowledge I have received is practical and invaluable. With this knowledge you can teach and provide quality medicine for your community. CP is a great teacher, knowledgable, enthusiastic, affirmative, and funny! I can’t recommend this school enough."
