"One of West Jefferson, NC's most visited attractions is Ashe County Church of Frescoes. The fresco paintings are housed in the Episcopal Parish of the Holy Communion and created by North Carolina artist and NC native Ben Long in 1974. “Mary, Great with Child,” "John the Baptist," and “The Mystery of Faith” grace the sanctuary. Creations by Long’s students also line the walls of this early 20th century church. These paintings draw thousands of tourists each year in one of the most unique displays of artwork ever created. It's free to all ages. So if you like old churches and cemeteries, stop by for a tour!"
"This was a pleasant, non- touristy stop. There is a recording you can play ( button is just inside the entrance) that shares information about the frescoes. They do accept donations to support preservation of the church and frescoes, but absolutely no pressure. (Don’t miss the frescoes at Holy Trinity in Glendale Springs, NC. GPS has it listed with a West Jefferson address, but it’s quite a distance from there. Worth the drive though and the GPS did take us to the right location. )"
"I'm so grateful there's a foundation to preserve these gorgeous frescoes. Be sure to visit both local churches under the Foundation's aegis!"
"We come here 34 years ago when we Were Married in October 1986. Today we came back its still beautiful!"
"Went for some quiet contemplation in these places. Weekday crowds, so I was basically alone. The frescoes are stunning depictions, beautifully done."
