Reviews of Weymouth Woods - Sandhills Nature Preserve
"Awesome park with a lot of different trails. Short and longer trails, kid friendly trails and other trails for those that want to get in a real good hike. Several low bridges and a bunch of little creeks. Dogs can get really dirty in a lot of the creeks though as the bottom seems to be black mush. Cool spots for photos as well if you are a photographer."
"Immersing oneself in Weymouth Woods is akin to taking a beautiful journey through time. This unique nature reserve captivates with its towering longleaf pines, some of the oldest of their kind, and offers an exceptional hiking experience spanning several miles. One of the crowning jewels of Weymouth Woods is undoubtedly its age-old pine tree, a symbol of endurance and a testament to the magnificent longevity of nature. Walking amidst these ancient trees, one can’t help but feel awe for their resilience and quiet grandeur. The park’s trails, which meander through these forests of longleaf pines, offer an array of hiking opportunities suitable for various fitness levels. Each journey brings with it a sense of tranquility and solitude, allowing you to truly absorb the beauty of your surroundings. The rustling of the pine needles underfoot, the scent of the woodland air, and the occasional birdsong offer a sensory treat. What makes the Weymouth Woods even more special are the hidden gems that are the water holes. Not immediately obvious, these secret spots provide an exciting quest for the adventurous hiker. Finding these serene water pockets is its own reward; they provide a unique, refreshing oasis in the heart of the woods. These secluded spots are perfect for a quiet break or a moment of reflection amidst your hike. Overall, Weymouth Woods is a captivating blend of ancient arboreal majesty, engaging trails, and hidden water pockets. Its unique characteristics make it an exciting and rewarding hiking destination. "Beautiful remnant longleaf pine. Whenever I return here from afar, this place is on the must visit list. Been hiking here since my Mom brought my young brothers and I here in the 70's. Much has changed as the urban area is now knocking on its door. This awesome forest is a window into the past... What more of the Sandhills of North Carolina used to look like. If you're in the area, this special place is well worth the visit. Sometimes think the controlled burning used to mimic the natural impacts of fire cover too much of the preserve at one time. Wonder if the diversity of plants and wildlife would benefit from smaller controlled fires, as this is a relatively small nature preserve. Smaller fires could allow for a higher diversity of plants and wildlife to continually exist at higher levels, rather than having to bounce back from almost ground zero throughout. Also, this natural area suffers from a common delima of parks in NC and mostly eastern US states that impacts wildlife (and plants) especially larger species who have few places to hide from human view and feel safe - too many trails. The balance of Nature vs. humans has tipped to humans... In the long run, this isn't beneficial to either. At least it is still a beautiful forest and there are some wonderful things to see and experience here. I remember the beaver my family saw here in the 70's, my mom and brothers still talk about it. Evidence shows beavers may still be seen. I have also found black bear sign here, was happy to see it. As they thankfully still can be observed in the greater area."
"I had been here quite a few times when I was really, really young, like about seventeen years ago, so I decided to hit this place up both for the first time in quite a while, and so I could get some much-needed exercise for the fat tub of lard I call my body. There are several trails that go through the nature preserve, and on my last visit there I'd say I did probably about 3 to 4 miles total. Well worth the revisit! The little museum adjacent to the visitor center has been dramatically transformed into more of a children's playroom, but everything else is the same! If you want a nice walk through nature, this is the place to do it!"
