Fontana Dam Visitors Center

"We decided to stop and check the Fontana Dam , well it was closed because of some construction, but we still got to have a walk to stretch the legs from driving and take some photos. I’m happy we did it"

"On November 2nd 2023. Water was REALLY low, so at this current time, it's not a good time to visit. Plus, there's a lot of construction going on. I've been before, and it's a fascinating experience, but I'd call or check with someone in advance of the conditions and if construction is complete. Disappointing that I didn't do that or people whom I asked close by when asking for directions didn't tell me that it was mostly closed, water was down, and construction had most cut off."

"Very cool to see. Great that you can walk out on the bridge. You get up close to the spillway. Beautiful views all around. Beware of taking The Dragons aka US 129 to or from the Gatlinburg area. My wife got motion sickness from the curvy road. It’s an amazing drive though. There’s a lot of sports cars speeding up and down this section of road. It looks like fun and I was jealous of them."

"Fontana Dam and Visitors Center is at the North Carolina entrance of the Fontana Lake. Just in front of the visitor center, there is a parking lot and a viewpoint of the lake. From the visitor center, you can get updated maps, videos, and displays about the dam and there are public restrooms at the visitor center. We spent a bit of time at the viewpoint. The serene lake view and the majestic mountain will make your time worthwhile."

"Very cool place to visit! They have a visitor's center with a lot of information about why the dam was built and how it works. They also have an observation tower that allows you to see both sides. It's a very beautiful location. They also have a gift shop. I believe they also have a snack bar area as well."
