About the Mountain Farm Museum
The Mountain Farm Museum, located in Cherokee, North Carolina, is a unique collection of historic log buildings gathered from throughout the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Visitors can explore a farmhouse, barn, apple house, springhouse, and smokehouse to get a glimpse of how families lived 100 years ago. The museum also features a working blacksmith shop and showcases historic gardening and agricultural practices. The nearby Mingus Mill, built in 1886, is a water-powered gristmill that stands as a tribute to the test of time. The site offers a self-guided tour booklet with historical photographs and illustrations, providing a glimpse into life a century ago. Proceeds from purchases at the visitor center's bookstore are donated to educational, scientific, and historical projects in the park.
Reviews of Mountain Farm Museum
"At first we almost missed the Mountain Farm Museum. It is adjacent to the Visitor’s Center, almost behind it. It was very interesting seeing the old farm buildings and what life was like. The structures are well preserved with signs describing the use of each. We found it a wonderful peek into farm life in the mountains. Each building on the site had a purpose and tells a story. It was very much worth the time we spent."
"My family and I visited during January of 2024. It is truly one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. It was peaceful and well maintained. I can't fathom what the original occupants of this settlement must have endured to survive here. Seeing wild elk was a bonus."
"Very cool buildings! Had a great time here on vacation. Very nice historical museum."
"My wife and I had a great time going through this museum. Everything outside is original (though brought in from other places w/n the area). There are chickens everywhere :) They also have people working in character, so it makes the tour even better. Also, bathrooms are very clean! Highly recommend this stop if you have an hour or so."
"We went to walk on a trail near the river. Nature is wonderful around the farm we didn't manage to visit museum cause it was late. There are some benches where you can sit and relax. Also you can see animals there. Be ready to take a pic of them. Also I saw people were fishing in a river. Trail will take about 1 hour in 1 way."
