Reviews of Schatzi's Design Gallery & Day Spa
"Schatzi and Mikea are the best!. I've been getting my locs done here for past 4-5 years. They only book one person at a time, so appointments are on time, professional and predictable. I'm happy to have found this salon."
"Best natural hair stylist (care giver) ever. 100% natural. I highly recommend her to anyone, wherever you are on your personal natural hair journey. to contact her."
"First things first, I have a lot of hair. It’s still a lot even though I cut if off by several inches nearly a year ago after I decided to stop getting blowouts to give my hair a break. It’s just dense, thick hair that does what it wants when it wants and has more than one curl pattern in it, driving me bonkers. So I decided to give myself a break and to get goddess locs like Meagan Good. It was a journey as I found it challenging to find someone who has patience (again I have a lot of hair) as well as a gentle touch due to me being extremely tender headed. So I consulted a friend who has locs, who recommended Hadiyah Lancaster (she’s been maintaining her locs for 3yrs now) As someone who has always had a lot of hair naturally, I don’t buy hair very often so I know nothing about the brands, the styles, the textures. Nada. So I went to YouTube to find what hair I needed to buy. He said “FreeTress” was the brand and that I needed “Marley braid” hair. So I bought a bunch of black “FreeTress Equal Jamaican Twist Braid,” aka “Marley braid” hair, and ... just in case, bought five packs of some other brand of Afro kinky hair, but a different color, in case I changed my mind about what style I wanted. But when I got to the shop (Schatzi's Design Gallery & Day Spa) I actually “needed” FreeTress, but it was a pack of shiny, spiral hair (Bohemian braid, I think) that was needed for the finishing look of the goddess locs, plus several bags of the Marley hair. I showed up at the salon with five packs of FreeTress Marley braid and five packs of the off-brand Afro kinky, and she used about nine bags of hair. At first Hadiyah suggested just getting regular faux locs, not goddess locs, since I didn’t have the right hair. But I was pretty dead set on the fact that if I was going to spend hundreds of dollars on this style I wanted to leave the salon with goddess locs even though they are more expensive. Thankfully Hadiyah left to get the right hair keeping me from bursting into tears over not getting exactly what I wanted. She achieved the look of the goddess locs in a pretty cool way. First she braided my real hair with the loose curly hair, then she wrapped the kinky “Marley” hair around the braid, creating the loc. She then sealed the ends with the heat from the flat iron as I was not comfortable using glue in my hair as seen on YouTube. It was a simple technique that rendered very cool, realistic, natural-looking locs—not too shiny or too synthetic-looking. The result, which took about 12hours and 45 minutes (shampoo, blow dry, braiding, and breaks included) was well worth it. After this I got a manicure, then went to Miami for business. The hair was a hit at the conference, where I was drowned in compliments and praise over the look. The style lasted about 2 months before my new growth came in. I booked another appointment to have them washed and touched up at the roots allowing me to keep this style for another month or so. Considering the hours, money and pain that went into getting my ideal, finished look, would I do this again? Most definitely. I love the look and plan to keep it for a bit. They’re gorgeous, over-the-top and a lot of fun. In fact, the only real downside is that now that I’ve returned I have ideal Miami, sun ’n’ fun hair, in Raleigh not Miami but I’ll probably get over it."
"If I could give a zero stars I would. I recently went to one salon & got a consultation by Hadiyah Lancaster (DosbyDee) & she told me to come to this shop to get goddess locs. I have only gotten micro braids & box braids in the past so this was a new venture for me. I found the color of hair I wanted in a mojito Cuban style hair & I met her at our appointment last Monday at 7am. I showed her the hair & she agreed it was good hair to use for the locs. She explained to my as she started doing the braids that when she seals the hair, she doesn’t burn them or use glue or dips them in hot water, she said she uses a flat iron to seal the locs. I was kind of thrown off by this, but I thought she must know something I don’t know. I spent a total of 21 hours in her chair. Monday from 7am to 3pm then from 10 pm until 6:30 am Monday to Tuesday & finally from 1 pm Tuesday until 5:30 that evening she finally finished. She thanked me for being so patient & believe me, I was!!! Especially as a single mom of 3, with an infant. By Wednesday 1/3 of the locks were unraveling. When she & I had the conciliation, I explained to her I was leaving on vacation. So when she asked me to come back in the shop after 21 hours I was upset & over it. I just did two days of no sleep just to have it unraveling. I contacted two loc specialist & explained the situation & they were shocked on how long she took & how she sealed the locs with a flat iron. I sent her a video since I was leaving out of town of the locs unravelling from all different areas. I just wanted a refund...she said that her & the owner said I could get 25% of what I paid. Yet all the other loc specialist & business owners I spoke to said I should get a full refund. Hadiyah blames my hair choice but if she couldn’t do that type of hair she should’ve never agreed to do it. That just shows she is only about the money & not her craft & the owner has yet to call me back. I guess a civil suit is required. It’s 2019...that’s not how we should be doing business."
"Went there for my Big Chop and had an EXCELLENT experience. I was so nervous to have my relaxed ends cut off but Jamie made my experience a smooth transition. She is very knowledgeable about natural hair and my two strand twist is beautiful!"
