We suspected timing belt, and were correct. It was overdue anyway. Performance and driving experience had been suffering. Hard start. Engine tapping for first minute or so upon start. Belt chirping. Steve's Auto did the timing belt maintenance: belt, pulleys, water pump, tensioner. No more tapping or chirping. Starts better. Quieter and smoother running overall. It's been a long time since it has run so well. Finally getting this done has given me peace of mind, which is a big deal to me.
